What's a good, cheap car to buy?

I recently applied for a job which, if successful, would mean that I would have to buy or lease a car. Right now, I know little to nothing about the different makes and models of cars. Also, I don't particularly have a lot of money to spend. As a result, I need advice: what is a good used car to lease? My main criteria are that it be cheap to buy/insure/fill with gas and that it be an automatic transmission. I don't care if it's small (I don't have a wife/kids, and I'm not using it to haul anything) or doesn't look overly fancy (as long as it isn't horrifyingly ugly) as long as it gets the job done.

Grab a 94+ Acura Integra coupe. Should be around $4K for Mid 90's to late 90s model.

Japanese, rock solid reliability and good looking. If looking for 4 door, then I recommend 2000+ Mazda Protege for a no thrill, cheap, inexpensive car.

I assume since you're looking into leasing, that it is new cars that you're interested in.
In that case, set a monthly budget, then look at all cars that fit your budget, and test-drive them. Get the one that feels the best to you. No need to worry about reliability/durability on a leased car, it only varies from excellent to very good on cars under warranty anyway. Much more important is that you like the car and it fits your needs and budget.
In my case, I don't care too much about the exterior looks. I spend much more time using the interior of the car, so I like to put more emphasis on seat comfort, feel of all the controls (especially the primary ones like steering and brakes), etc.

forget the integra... corolla... or civic... etc...

get an old camry.. it'll be just as reliable and lower to insure than the above mentioned cars
