When you get above 20" I don't know of any 4:3 monitors. They're all widescreen.
Frankly why spend the rest of your life with a piece of furniture which limits what monitor you can use. If you can't modify it, get rid of it.

What's the largest LCD monitor for this space?
I have a computer desk which has a limited space for the monitor. It's got a shelf on top and sides that prevent me from putting in a monitor of any size.
Currently, I'm using a 19" 4:3 LCD in it, but I'd like to get something larger. Based on the approximate ratio of this monitor-space, I think I'm limited to 4:3 screens.
The dimensions are: 20.25 in (wide) x 16.75 in (height).
Any good recommendations, or am I pretty much stuck with another 19" screen?
Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm not really keen on getting rid of a perfectly good computer desk just to buy a larger monitor (and another computer desk).

Dell has a very nice Ultra Sharp 18" LCD. Colour reproduction is almost CRT and response if fast. Great for photos and watching movies. Since it's an Ultra Sharp, text will look very sharp. I find the new WS monitors from every manufacturer to be sacrificing sharpness bit size for speed & WS ratio.
Or purchase a 22" and wall mount it. This frees up desk space and allows for bigger screen.

could ya be a lil more specific as to the type of desk you got like it is 1 of those fibreboard assemble together kinds with a shelf on the top of it that goes across or ??
if you have 20.x available you should be able to have a 22" widescreen according to all my mesurments as my 24" widescreen is actualy only truly 22.x" wide. I started looking at wide screen mesurments & noriced the actual diangonal width they state subtract 2-4" & you got the sets usual width if there's no speakers mounted on the side of it.
So ... worst case senario you pull it abit out from the monitors cove & ya should be fine.

Hmm.... sounds intriguing. Do you have a model number on that 18" Dell Ultra Sharp? Does it come in a 22" model?
It is one of those desks made from particle board, with a shelf on top; and cabinet off to the right of the monitor cove. I tried to find a pic online, but couldn't find an accurate one.
I could pull it a little out of the alcove, except that it's on a monitor shelf and it might tip over (fall forward).

Dunno no why I have to get flamed just because I want to reuse an existing desk. Obviously there's always the option to just replace the desk right out; that's the easy answer. I just wanted to see if someone out there had a more creative suggestion that would be helpful (and thank you to those people who did provide some good suggestions).

A 22 inch widescreen is the max you'll fit. But measure the exact dimensions because based on stand height and bezel thickness some models might not fit by a hair.
For instance, my LG L222WT is about 19.5" wide and 16.75" tall. So such a display would JUST fit.
The popular Samsung 226 will be your ABSOLUTE max fit. It's 20.25" wide and 16.6" tall._______________

Yeah, it's the 226BW. Performance, panel and the Samsung name make it popular. Plus it's currently Samsung's "mainstream" 22-inch part. Price is not that great at $300 though.
But anyway, you will NOT go wrong with this one. When I was shopping, this was my other choice. What tipped the scales for me was that LG's 3 year warranty is an ADVANCED EXCHANGE while with Samsung you gotta send your LCD in and wait a few weeks. At that time they both cost the same._______________

I agree with OR ...... the LG might be the better buy there. But yeah, some peaple like to be that way so just ignore them, anyways as or says get the monitors dimentions & mesure what ya got cause then you could maybe ajust the shelf by adding a lil piece to the front of the ledge to allow for it to mount on there but 22" is definatly a nice size to get & use. Go for it !!
