Anyway, he was a close friend, you kicked him out meaning you wanted him to walk home drunk, meaning you didn't care what could happens to him, i.e. robbed, kidnapped, shanked, or even pantsed. Really don't see you as a good friend. Just my personal opinion on what I've read.

My intention on kicking him out of the car was my way of sending a message to him that I didn't like what he said and that if he wants to continue to get rides with me he has to show some respect. I already agree that it was the wrong thing to do but I wasn't actually going to leave him there I just wanted an apology.

I don't think anyone is defending physical violence it's just that most think the situation did no need to be escalated to that point to begin with. You could have easily joked and said "we might be idiots but at least we don't go to bars and drink by ourselves" our something similar to that just to shut him up. Also why did you let him beat on you like that? Grow some balls and fight back instead of worrying about your phone.

I think it's more likely that he was just trying to think of an excuse that he didn't fight back and this is all he came up with.

Stranding a good friend in the middle of nowhere is almost unforgivable. Him punching you is unacceptable as well. But you did initiate this, and reading just the first few paragraphs I could tell where you were unreasonably irritated.

I usually have a nasty habit of locking my friends up in a rear backhand Sankyo with a right handed nasal peel to the face, then press out the back of their right knee so they crumple to the floor in the most awkward position possible.

Then I start patting them down for weapons and spare coffee change.
