OP, I brought mine from Hong Kong. That doesn't help you but as far as I know, 3rd party manufacturers have not cracked the chip for this battery yet. That means you have to buy the original Nikon battery. Bargains will typically not be found since Nikon controls the pricing. Photoprice.ca does not list the D5100 battery but you can look at the low price vendors for other battery models to find the lowest price.

There have been several posts on batteries here in the last 6 months where a couple of Canadian online resellers have been identified. Have you tried searching for these?

You can try at amazon to buy it. I think you will get the battery on a cheaper price. Also try at eBay to buy the battery.

THE EN-EN14 CLONES DOESN'T WORK WITH THE D5100 (yet) or the P7100/D3100/D3200 for that matter, it only works with the older CoolPix P7000 with firmware v1.1 (v1.2 kills it)

Get a genuine one from reputable HK eBay seller, the cheapest I was able to find with from a top rated seller is hkdzone, for $52.90 with HK Post registered air mail

Upgrade to what? The MSRP on the EN-EL14 is $90 in Canada, in the US, it's $41, so having it for $53 is pretty good

Even if you upgrade, the battery is still gonna cost you as much :P unless you buy POS chinese batteries at $10 lol

Word to the wise when using cheap Chinese knock offs of the real thing. Use at your own risk.

There have been reports of these batteries leaking, especially ones made for Nikon/Canon DSLRs. They do not go through the same quality control as genuine batteries, that's why they are so much cheaper.

They heat up a lot quicker and discharge quicker too - even if you fully charge one and don't use it for a month - they will have lost their charge.

A battery leaking in your camera is bad news as it could corrode the circuits in your camera - which is a very costly repair as the camera has to be disassembled to replace the part.

Ask yourself, is saving $40-$50 worth the hassle when you have to spend a few hundred replacing the camera parts should something goes wrong?

I bought one from JR.com in NYC, US. I paid $39.99 plus $5.95 for shipping. Total of $45.94 No tax or duty. Great deal! I used their Mail Innovations Super Saver Shipping to avoid brokerage fees.
UPS does the pickup from JR.com and then transfers it over to US postal service for processing and delivery. Package arrived in 8 days to Central Canada.
This is the Original Nikon battery with packaging and user manual. The EN-EL14 sells for $90 to $120 in Canada which to me is just wrong.

Thanks to Busiu for sharing this deal with the forum.

You can use off-brand batteries in the D5100, but you need an original battery handy and get the battery grip for the D5100.

Nikon doesn't make battery grips for the D5100/D3100, so this is a 3rd party accessory that relies on an outside cable to use the vertical shutter. Brands include MeiKe, Neweer, and Digipower (Sold at FS and BB).

If you insert the non-oem battery, the D5100 will reject it. What you do is install the grip, and place the original battery in one slot and the non-oem in the other. Turn on the camera, it will work fine. Now without disconnecting the grip, remove the original battery and place another non-oem one in its place. turn the camera on and everything should still work. If you unplug the grip or take both batteries out, you have to repeat the process. Original battery only needs to be recognized once every time power is connected.

I'm also annoyed at how there are no AA-based gripsfor this camera. If you don't have a spare batt you are SOL, at least AA are readily available almost anywhere

Some folks seems to love the Wasabi 3rd party and the for Nikon one is decoded so it works in the nikon bodies.

Japanese cells, assembled in China. Usually has higher capacity than original and most reviewer say work as great.

Amazon.com usually ships these to Canada, if not the seller's site does.
