If a crap bike is the same as a good bike (kinda like how a Chevy Sprint is the same as a BMW X5), then you're right - you can get a bike much cheaper at a department store. However, as I've already said, if you want good after-sales service for your bike, a good product and a good fit, you're not going to get that from a department store. Of course, if you can tell me ONE department store that does this consistently, then I will admit I'm wrong.
bike shops are basically a make work project for people who dont have the personality to get hired by a department store.
They may not have the personality, but when it comes to bikes, they certainly have the knowledge, and that's far more important. Go to a department store and start asking about bikes and all you usually get is "Uh....it's got two wheels...." Sport Check for example, doesn't even carry 23C tubes...let alone tyres...and I can almost guarantee that your average department store staffer (or even Sport Check staffer for that matter) wouldn't even know what they are for. Then again, I doubt even you know what they are for (without hitting Google, that is).
Anyway, this would be fun but I'm going to wrap this right up. I'm right, you're wrong and we all know it. Have a great weekend.

For most things yeah that is s probably about right but if you're so dead on going for a hard tail at a department store..
Why even bother with this thread? You answered you're own question.
Bike stores no good, go everywhere else.. done

errr, there is more than one department store. there is also the internet. how are the prices at bike shops at the end of the season???
I repair my own bike so I bike shop is not necessary for me. My local bike shop treated me quite well when I came into get my dept store bike fixed. sold me a good rear wheel for 30 bucks. gave me a replacement seat and seat post for cheap. not sure why . they have felt sorry for me.

I'd say the deals are pretty good right now. They will get better, but stock will be picked over and you might not be able to find a bike in your size.
I ended up getting a Trek 4300 Disc for around $500 tax in.

I spent a little more than I was planning, but if I get 8 - 10 years out of this bike like I did with my last, it will be worth it.
Oh yeah. I know you said you do your own servicing, but when I was shopping around most places offer 1 - 2 years of free tune ups with the purchase.

Actually, he didn't get flamed for asking a question. OP flamed others because he didn't like the genuine answer he received. Perhaps next time he'll put more detail in his question if he wants a more detailed answer.
The thing I find most amusing is that suddenly to the OP, bike store employees are helpful people who have treated him well when he's gone in with a dept. store bike. Go figure...it wasn't all that long ago they were people who were unable to even get jobs at a department store.

The prices are a bit high as they carry mid to high end bikes but the quality is definitely a lot better and the staff are super helpful and knowledgable.
Yes,they are very expensive.
Do your research with them and your other local bike shops.
Sideline, your name is the same as my sisters.

Plus aren't the Diamondbacks there specially built for them with a DB frame and cheaper components?
I was looking at Bushtaka in Ottawa and they have a nice Trek for around $350. Kundstat in Kanata is around that price point as well.
Tommy and Lefevre has pretty good smaller bikes.
I bought a Gary Fisher 16" frame bike there 3 years ago-haven't seen many smaller frame bikes in stores though.
In Ottawa on Bank st there are quite a few good bike shops.
Sportchek is ok,but they don't know that much and you can't really customize your bike that much.
At T&L I had no problems changing the tires to anythor kind, changing the seat ect....
I think I paid around $400 for my bike on sale-not too many smaller models in stock usually...
