I have a hard to fit foot.
Locally, when I need to buy shoes that fit - I have a choice between a few cheaply-made throw-away stylish shoes at WalMart and Payless , or extremely expensive grandmother-worthy styles at the specialty shops like Canadian Footwear. Or, I could spend a month's wages on having a shoe made from scratch. There is no in-between.
Every other local bricks-and-mortar store only carries the medium or "B" width shoes, even if that shoe is offered in a wide by the manufacturer.
What's worse, I find that there are fewer wide shoes on the shelf locally NOW than there were even a few years ago.
And so I've had to cross the border to buy shoes.
I feel like I'm living in a third world country.
All of the Canadian based online shoe retailers seem to suffer from the same problems the local retail stores have: NO wide shoes at all, not enough selection (in wide OR medium) and anything in specialty sizes by designer brands priced way above the head of the average consumer.
SoftMoc has the occasional wide shoe in stock, but you can't search for wide sizes using their search engine.
Browns shoes (http://www.brownsshoes.com) doesn't carry ANY wide shoes, even in styles that are offered in wide by the manufacturer.
J. Siegel Footwear (http://www.jseigelfootwear.on.ca/) sells designer brands in wide, but there is NO search engine and no way to search their entire catalogue by size. Then there's the expensive prices.
Zappos may be an american retailer, but they carry a huge selection of shoes in all widths and sizes in all prices. When they have a sale, I can buy two or three properly-fitting shoes that cost me the same as one designer ill-fitting pair off the shelf here in Winnipeg, Canada duties and shipping included.
Returns are a pain, and I'd lose money having to return shoes. But the pros outweigh the cons for selection and fit. If Zappos had a local bricks-and-mortar store, they'd make a killing - if only because of me.

You'll be charged duties calculated from the value of the item you are ordering. They actually call it an "import fee". The system will tell you the exact amount once you have entered the destination as it varies from province to province. You will not be charged anything else - I wasn't when I ordered from them in Sept.

Unfortunately, Zappos beats most "Canadian based" stores

http://www.shoebuy.com/
Pricey shipping though
And don't bother with Cnd Zappo. That site blows ****ing goats. Doesn't even have 20% of the selection as the US counter part.
