Where can I send my 1.44 MB floppy disks to be reused or recycled?
My father and I have accumulated a bunch of floppy disks in those old floppy containers. I'm virus checking the disks, erasing any files and quick formatting the disks and throwing them into a box. I want to get rid of these floppy disks and/or the extra floppy disk containers that we have. I've added them to my for sale post.
Any idea where I could get rid of the disks? Ideally I'd like them to be re-used and/or recycled.
thanx

Good idea. I'll go through them all and put them in some of the floppy disk containers I don't need.

maybe your local college or high school could use them..
they always complain about no budget for all the kids for personal disks for school..
I know I have that problem.. we all had to pay $2 for a disk. to use for class._______________

warning !
I hope there is nothing on those disks that is in anyway confidential. If you are deleting all files and then quickformating, it is trivial for someone to "undo" those steps and view your files.

The magnetic properties of those floppies breaks down over the years. I would suggest you take an extracto knife and just destroy the media and toss them in the garbage.
You wont be doing anyone a favor by giving half dead media to goodwill or a charity

Not quick formatting them unless there isn't sensitive or somewhat personal data on them. Anything with data thats personal, I've cut and pasted the files off the floppy and then ran a FULL FORMAT.
On a side note, most of the disks are fine, and only one may have had a virus, but I formatted them all. If a disk is stuborn, be patient and go with full format.
Some hilarious finds were MS Dos 6.21! OOooo! And Windows 3.1! Oooo. I thought about keeping them, but copyright laws aside, I'm sure they're available somewhere. But I'll keep my originals of 6.21...lol...never know!

I have the same dilemma. What's an environmentally friendly way to get rid of these?
I have over a thousand 8", 5-1/2" & 3.5" floppies and firmies to dispose of. This collection cost me over $5000 to acquire years ago just in media alone (the 8" floppies were $30 each). Now it all fits on a 4Gig CF card.
No time to format it all. And I no longer have the 8" drives to format it either.
Does anyone know where to find a magnetic bulk eraser before I get rid of these disks?

Tapscott
There is a non profit employment centre run by Centennial College at Tapscott and Finch (One block east of Markham Rd). I remotely admin their servers.
Anyways, this is a free research centre for people looking for employment. they have 24 Dell computers. People are allowed to use these for free as well as the Laser Printers and FAXes on the premsis.
They also give away free floppy disks. Since the people that come to this place are unemployed, many do not have money to buy a USB key.
So, if you would like to donate your disks, this is the place to go. They use quite a bit of floppies each week.
Drop them off there, I am sure they would appreciate it. For those in Mississauga, you can leave them with me and I can drop them off
