Where to dispose used Engine Oil?
I recently started changing Engine oil and filter at home. I buy my own engine oil and filter. I have a question on what to do with the used oil.
A friend of mine told me that, according to the law, whoever sells oil must take the used oil back from us. I tried this but the store (usually walmart) always denied to take back the used oil. My friend also told me that if the store denies taking back used oil, just leave the container at their door. I know they charge stupid "Environmental Fee" on oil and oil filter both. They said this is the fees from government for recycling the plastic oil container when we throw them in the garbage. Is it true ? or that's the fees for assuming that we will return the used oil and they will have to recycle it?
I tried to find further info on government websites but could not find anything solid. Please post any govt. websites that describes the law on returning the used oil.

Your local city or region-operated transfer station/dump/recycling centre will accept your old oil. Make note of the limits before you bring 40 jugs back, as they do have a maximum.

Provide me any source of govt. website with which I can fight the store in case if they do not accept it.
I don't think there is such law.

I'm pretty sure most if not all Canadian Tire stores will take back your used motor oil.

Does Canadian Tire let you dump the oil and keep the container? I don't want to have to buy a new 13-14$ container each time I change my oil. That would be stupid.

After you pour the new oil in the enginge, can't you re-use that container?

The oil I use for my vehicle only comes in 1L bottles. I guess I could empty my big oil pan into each of those 1L bottles and bring them to Canadian Tire. It would be simpler if CTC offered users to empty their oil pans into some huge drum or something instead.

Just pour it back in the 1l bottles one at a time. Have two different funnels, one for the clean oil and one for the dirty.

Canadian Tire, drop it off at the auto motive section.
maybe some other auto garage, some use the used car oil for their heater.

You can also pour it into the gallon jugs that windshield wiper fluid comes in. Possibly also the gallon size bleach jugs if you rinse them out first. etc. If using one of these alternate containers take off the old labeling and use a marker pen to write "engine oil" on the outside so the recyclers will know what it is.
I only buy oil now in the large jugs to avoid this problem.

But, you have to empty out the old oil first before you put in the new oil.
Therefore, you need a empty jug 1st.
For sure re-use the jug of the new oil, but that'll be for the next/future oil change.
