where to get saffron
A recipe I would like to make calls for saffron threads and Spanish paprika. I don't see it at my neighbourhood Metro or Loblaws. Which store(s) in north Toronto would sell these? Thanks.

The highland farms at Dufferin & Steeles has it. They have containers of it in the spice rack section (McCormick spices) where it's packaged in a white envelope inside the bottle. They also used to carry containers of persian saffron behind the cashier.
The best place to get it is from the Menonites at the various markets around Kitchener / Waterloo. Way cheaper. Their kids don't have much to do so they collect Saffron by hand and package it. +1 for child labour!

Bulk Barn has both .
If you are serious about expensive spices or herbs eBay is a better choice. Usually very fresh, and low cost shipped by USPS.
I get saffron, smoked paprika, vanilla beans, green coffee, fennel pollen, safety blades etc. from eBay sellers.

This information is faulty. Mennonite kids work hard, and you are objectifying them.
The fall crocus used for true saffron does not grow well in Ontario. There would have to be many acres of it for even a small crop.
Maybe these kids are picking safflower, which yields a low cost, false and unscented spice sold as fake saffron.

+1. Be very wary of fake/low grade saffron. The best saffron comes from the Iberian peninsula and Kashmir (although this is almost impossible to get). Saffron, although very expensive, can really transform a dish. Also, if you use high quality saffron, you don't need much.

The Persian supermarket Super Khorak (On Yonge south of Steeles) has the saffron threads.

You can find saffron in Loblaws...you just have to look for the little plastic squares...or some of the spaice jars (you'll see a paper folded inside).
You can also find in many health food stores (i.e. Big Carrot in Toronto) as well as many specialty food shops (i.e. Alex Farm Cheese or Pusitari's)

Really? I'll be sure to apologize to the 3 of them I have here after I'm done using them as a muskoka chair / foot stool combo.
