3 guys go to a hotel... it costs $30/night.. so each guy pays $10.. the owner cuts them a deal and only charges them $25.. so since you cant split up $5, he pockets $2 and gives each guy back $1... each guy end up paying $9 which is $27 total.. and the owner has $2.. where is the other $1

the guy who split the money has it

10 -1 = 9
10 -1 = 9
=$26

so either the guy pocketed an extra dollar or loonie fell on the floor

I think you misunderstood the OP. The owner took $2 then give each of the three guys $1.

It's a riddle, just poorly told.

Basically it's $30-$3 to get $27. Most people then get confused because people add the $2, which gets you to $29, but you should really subtract the $2 for $25.

Old riddle, I heard this when I was in highschool.

It has to do with order of operations. As MrWizard mentioned you can't look at it as $30/3.....=$10-$1 each = $9.

You have to look at the aggregate of the sums.

So essentially it costs you $25 for the room.....$2 to the owner and $1 each for guys....

$25 (room) + $2 (owner) +3x$1 (guys) = $30.

there is no missing dollar.
25 dollar goes to the motel
1 dollar each of the men
2 dollars to owner

the part that fools everybody is 9x3 = 27 which is wrong because its simply

total paid versus total returned.

easiest to say is..
each guy has 10 dollars ONLY
they each go broke and have 0 dollars after paying the motel..
the guy returns 1 dollar each and pockets 2..
so the men have a dollar each only.. not 27 total.
