where to put a plasma in a new house? pics included
thinking of purchasing a new house/ Here's a picture of the great room:

Where would I put the plasma? Over the fireplace is where I'd like to put it, but
a) what about the semi-circle window on top of the fireplace - is that a problem? should i get the builders not to install that window (it is nice!) should iit be higher?
b) is the heat from the fireplace going to be a problem?
c) is there anywhere else to put the plasma?
d) is there anywhere else to put the fireplace?
Here's a picture of the layout (we're going for the greatroom concept)...

Over the fireplace would suck (IMO).. I think fireplaces should be left alone as they are an attraction unto themselves.
Plus in this case, there's a window above the fireplace._______________

Suspend from ceiling in middle of room. No need for a wall...

Get a stand for it and put it where the little end table is (on the left - it looks like there is an electrical outlet there too) and put your couch back from it a reasonable distance (10-12 feet).
If you put it over the fireplace, it would be too high.Last edited by gordholio; May 3rd, 2006 at 11:15 PM.

Slide the whole fireplace and tri-window configuration away from the large twin windows. This frees up wall space to put a proper wallunit; one that will be large enough to frame your plasma TV. The elliptical window would also line up nicely with the kitchen arch. (Note plasma TV's run fairly hot. So don't try to enlcose it. Checkout the demo units at the retail stores.)

Now place the sofa to face the tv, back towards the half wall.
The half wall in this configuration is also well suited to nestle the rear speakers in a surround setup.
At the very least, prewire to give you the option later. Cabling at time of construction is alot cheaper and neater than a retrofit. Just have the electricians make it easy to cut and fish out the cables later.
Where the sofa was, place an armchair and side table to divide the greatroom into entertainment area and cozy fireplace area.If you get a Stressless-style chair it can even pivot and alternate between either part of the room. Keep these pieces light and mobile so it's easy to expand one area into the other when the occassion calls for it.
Balance the fireplace area with another armchair on the other side of the fireplace, + throw rug + coffee table.
Here's a rough sketch:

How about getting a smaller mantle and putting the plasma on the wall, above the fireplace and below the window? What size of plasma are we talking about? 42? 50?
Another solution is to put it in front of the two windows, centered. You won't have the sun hitting the screen for sure and it won't block the view to outside too much.Last edited by mart242; May 4th, 2006 at 11:40 AM.
