Why are car commercials so awful?

Like the new Chevrolet Cruze commercial. 'For the mature'er', really?

The only commercial that doesn't make me instantly recoil is the Dodge Ram Rebel 'Sorry Mom' or Aston Martin Vanquish one.

Who comes up with these crap commercials? And are they even effective?

No creativity these days.. All commercials resemble one another, not interesting all the way.

And thanks to CAFE all car shapes resemble one another too.

Do you want the Toyota jellybean or the Ford jellybean?

who remembers the "minivan man" commercial? all I remember is "do you know the minivan man? have you seen the minivan man", how does the rest of it go?

The goal is to make you remember the commercial so yes, cringe, humor and visual impressiveness make you remember. People don't tend to remember spec sheets so those went out the window years ago.

it's a sad day when commercials for imaginary space ships are better than the ones for actual cars.

Corporate Average Fuel Economy regulations makes them all look the same?
Aerodynamic efficiency really does not care what rules are in place for engine fuel efficiency and I certainly do not think all vehicle look the same. :)

If anything, it's probably safety regulations which are affecting vehicle shape, not CAFE.
