Why is junk food socially acceptable?
I recently cut out all junk food. Its part of my new years resolution. I was suppoed to do it for a month, but now ive decided to do it for life. Not a single cookie, doughnut, french fry, chocolate, etc etc. At first It was hard, now I dont even think about it.
So anyway everyday at the office it seems theres some email floating around annoucing doughnuts on X persons desk, or choclates in the lunch room, or some1 brought in cookes. As soon as these go out, people swarm to them like bees to nector. I dont get it. Why is this behaviour acceptable? Why do people bring doughnuts into the office? No1 brings in fruit slices, or vegtables, always a bunch of junk. And then people all seem to say the say thing. "oh its ok, as long as its in moderation" and "it tastes so good". The more I think about it tho, thats just BS. Im sure heorine feels great. Is it ok to take that in moderation?
People are able to say no to drugs (well most people), which are bad for their body but cant say no to junk food which is bad for the body? Why? Thoughts?

Because if you're not a total pig, you'll likely end up burning it off. I eat like 3000 calories a day but I run 6 miles a day at the gym so it all burns off eventually and I don't put on weight.
However, it's always a sad sight to see a tubby feasting away. I got off the bus this afternoon and I saw a "big" man sitting on bare snow just chowing down on his donuts. It's almost as if they have no care for their body or how others perceive them - ANIMALS they are.
Soon enough, they're gonna fall in the handicap category and we'll have to give up our close-up parking spots to them.
Yeah, yeah.. the diabetics and such, we'll excuse them for being overweight.
I heard Alabama implemented a fat tax, what a neat idea.

I bet you don't last. When you don't eat any junk food for a few years or something then you can make a self-righteous post about junk food. Comparing junk food to heroin is stupid, if you are going to compare it to a drug compare it to alcohol. Alcohol is socially acceptable even though it's harmful. Also, I am glad to see that you are perpetuating the image the rest of Canada has of Vancouverites.

Here's my theory:
1) Unlike Heroin and most other drugs, most "junk" food doesn't contain anything that can cause severe dependency/addiction (there are studies that have suggested that refined sugar and other things are addictive, but no reputable ones that suggest that the addiction is as severe as with drugs).
2) Most "junk" food doesn't contain anything that is inherently bad for us; it is only higher in things that can hard us if consumed in excess (fat, sugar, etc..). Most of this stuff is also present in "normal" food, and you would get the same problems if you consumed it in excess, too.
3) People often don't put out things like fruit because it's more expensive.

Everything is fine in moderation, even IV heroin, assuming it's pure diamorphine.
The taboo happens when people don't moderate.

That scenario is actually quite funny to watch. I've brought in a couple boxes of chocolates or some cakes to the office before and people are almost climbing over top of each other to get some. Hey, it tastes good.
Mind you I also lost a veggie tray once at work. I left it in the fridge for my dinner and didnt arrive back at the office till about 1pm or so. Veggie plate was gone, plate was washed and in the drying rack. No one ever owned up to it.

So foreign substances such as preservatives and additives among others, that are man made chemical creations, that our bodies would never digest in a million years naturally, are not inherently bad for us... High Fructose Corn Syrup is good? Trans fats are good? The stuff that DOESN'T get put on labels, such as how they use ammonia to disinfect raw beef?

Saying "Why is junk food socially acceptable" is just as stupid as saying "Why are people that think junk food is socially unacceptable, socially acceptable"
There is nothing about junk food that makes it socially unacceptable.

1. Good for you that you've made these CHOICES in your life.
2. Now you've become one of those individuals that should really not stick your nose in what other people's business when it comes to food. Seriously, just because you've made a choice doesn't mean you should go preaching what you think right is from wrong. You're like the CHURCH folk that go around preaching about GOD. Just STFU and people won't hate you.

Yeah, I guess I have - - but I was talking about non-human animals.

I don't understand your statement, usually animals aren't kept as pets/zoo are allowed to freely roam around, so maybe exercise is the answer.
