Why won't canadian companies pay us the same salary as american salaries?

A software developer can make $150,000 US in the states but in canada, only $80,000 cdn. Why canadian companies refuse to pay us the same salary?

Cost of living is probably ONE of those reasons.

Same reason they don't pay Canadian salaries in India.

Why would anyone do anything if they don't have to do it and it doesn't help them?

If they have difficulty hiring they will become more competitive with salaries. They don't have that problem, or their hiring and man power needs is less urgent. Therefore they don't raise salaries.

A teacher in the US gets paid 30k and a teacher in Canada gets paid 90k. Same with the police...so some jobs pay more and some pay less.

Why do you think there is any obligation to do so? Even within the same country, salaries/prices/costs of anything vary widely.

Cause the best and brightest go to the us and demand the best salaries ... the leftovers and 2nd tier come to Canada generally .

Cause they don't have to. They pay the minimum they need in order to attract and retain employees. Which in Canada is apparently lower than it is in the US.

Where did you get the US salary data from? Silicon Valley salary is probably that much due to high cost of living (rent/own) and competition. Anywhere outside of the Silicon Valley and NYC the salary is much lower.

^This. Average salaries for most professons in the US are lower than in Canada except for some geographic locations as you have noted.
Software Developers in Mississippi would love to make Toronto salaries.

totally doable... remote job. or join with an up-and-coming company that does not have a Canadian HR division.
