WIFI router goes down on heavy BT usage
Does anyone else have this problem? After extended usage of BT it renews my ip address to some random one, then i have to go up stairs and restart the router. ive always had this problem since i had the router/wifi card (1 year). Is there a solution for this problem via drivers or setting changes, some1 help me!
My router & wifi card is SMC branded, i've owned a smc router before and never had a problem with it.

does the random IP start with 169?
Have you tried changing the channel that the wireless is on?

Home/small business routers don't have hardware which is robust enough to handle heavy P2P usage. Chance are what's happening is your causing the device to run out of memory, thus crashing.
The best one so far would have to be the Linksys WRT54G using a 3rd party backend, although even it will crash.
I suggest using a dedicated machine with a linux firewall distribution such as clarkconnect as your gateway.

What Jordie said, minus the part about the Linksys.
At least it only happens to you after extended usage. Every single consumer router I have used, BT will kill it within about 15 minutes unless I severely cap off the number of connections it makes. In the case of the last one I tried (a Linksys), it delays it to a few hours.

make max downloads 4 \uploads 4 slots each this might help the traffic of them . check the settings on the control panel of your router to alow the ports to have 80% bandwidth( other 20 for your browsing non bt needS)
how often does this happend . i am on wifi and i had a problem at first but upgraded the software i was using and poof problem solved.
does it say your connected ? port forwarding set properly ?

it happens when i use BT heavly (more then 2 downloads) or when i use it for a long period of time. unfortunetly i dont have the option to change it to 80%
bt is connected properly, i opened 6881 successfully getting regular speed.

I had similar problems with a Netgear router (614? 615? something like that). I replaced it with a Linksys and haven't had any problems since, though I'm not a heavy user.
I also had similar problems with a Netgear network card interestingly enough! Even with up to date drivers, the Netgear network card would cause the system to hang up for 30-60 seconds at a time until I closed BT and disabled the network device. I swapped it out with another card and everything worked fine. Put the Netgear back in, same problems. Boot to Windows 2000, same problem. Rebuild computer, same problem! Finally play with the BT client to limit the # of connections, gets better and better the lower I set it.
Anyway yeah, BT and other P2P is a good way to weed out the weak network components.

yep, happened to me. so i disconnected the router and hooked up directly and it still happened. so that rules out my router. now i dont know whats wrong. maybe i should change from the default ports.

hmm.. wut port do u suggest. im using azereus so theres only one a port option rather then a range.

Yeah Azereus uses just one rather than a range of 10. Just use anything that isn't in the default range and doesn't conflict with something else. Use 14,332 or something

Does the rest of your i-net stop working as well? If that's the case it may be the NIC.
I suggest trying a different NIC. (Network Interface Card)
Try to gather as much information as possible when it occurs. Can you view websites? Is there still transfer going on? Can you trace route remote hosts?
Cheers.

its happened so many times ive already got all the info lol. i cant use the internet when it happens, i get that 169 address, there is no transfer going on according to DU meter. funny thing is, if i release/renew, it wont work but if i disable and enable the network adapter, itll work fine again. and it only happens when im downloading about 5 or more files from bittorrent. i downloaded the first season of house last week and had 10 torrents open and it would go out every half hour. i was thinking it was the NIC since it was the only thing i haven't ruled out but it had been working fine for the last 8 months.

I've had this problem ever since I came back home from school. Not sure what the problem is but I guess it's probably the router. When I've got downloads with lots of connections going, it's impossible to surf any pages. The problem usually resolved itself when I stop the downloads, but I reset the router every so often to help it along. Now that those TV torrent sites are down, plus the fact that I've got 3 gigs to last me till the end of the month, means that I probably won't have to worry about this problem for a little while.
