Windows Vista Sleep Problems
I'm running 64 bit Windows Vista on a desktop that I built. It's a Core 2 Duo, with an Asus P5K-VM motherboard.
I've tried a bunch of things, but I can't seem to get my computer to "sleep" properly.
I've fiddled around with the settings, and I basically get one of two problems:
1. The computer sleeps for about 2 seconds, then immediately starts up again. I check the system log and it says it's being waken up by a USB device (likely my keyboard and mouse).
2. If I disable my keyboard/mouse for wake up (using only the power button to wake up), it sleeps fine. But then when it wakes up again, the keyboard and mouse don't appear to be powered correctly, and not long after I get a blue screen of death.
Basically I'd to have my comp be able to sleep to save power instead of shutting down all the time.
Anyone have ideas?

Not to sure myself but if your trying to save power and create less heat then I would try Hibernation, it will save everything that your currently doing and turn off the computer. Once you turn it back on it loads up pretty fast right back to where you were.
Also you save even more power because the computer is turned off.

Yeah I know it saves more to have it completely off, but sometimes it would just be convenient.
"Hibernation" doesn't seem to be an option though, it's only sleep, restart or shut down.

True I see what you saying.
If you would like to Enable Hibernation you need to go to your Power options, there is a tab called Hibernation enable it from in there.

You have to turn Hibernation on yourself if it's not already on.

I just looked in the Power Options, there isn't anything for hibernation. I think there was in XP, but I'm using Vista. Or maybe my MB doesn't support hibernation?

Oh wait, I just remembered I had disabled it in the System settings because it had this huge 4 GB file to save my RAM for hibernationg

Ok, I got the sleep to work after fixing my hibernation file. But now my Linksys wireless USB adapter doesn't start up properly when it wakes up. I guess there probably isn't a solution unless they have better drivers.

can you go into device manager/properties and tell windows not to manage the power for that device?

Yeah, but both options leaves me with a poor result.
1) blue screen when waking up
2) device does not power after wake up
And there don't seem to be any new drivers for adapter, so I'm stuck.

I've got the same problems with an older XP computer. Can you tell me where to find the system log?

I had the exact same problem a few months ago.
The fix was here:

Could be ACPI problem in the bios, so try to update the bios.
Could be a chipset driver problem, so go to intel and see if there is a newer driver.
Could be a USB driver problem, you may have other USB devices as well.
Also got this from Asus' website (don't know if your motherboard model is applicable):
Quote:
"If you have recently updated your BIOS, please clear RTC RAM (CLRTC) jumper first, and load default at the BIOS menu. Sometimes, clearing RTC RAM (CLTRC) jumper and load BIOS default can help eliminate some of unexpected phenomenons.
If this phenomenon still persists, it may be caused by VISTA OS. VISTA does not allow system to enter Standby mode, if "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" for an USB or PS/2 wake-supported device (such as mouse or keyboard) has been checked under "Device Manager", while the USB or PS/2 port has not switched its power mode to +5VSB that allows delivery of standby power to USB or PS/2 ports under soft OFF state. Because VISTA enables this standby option per default, and motherboards often set USB power modes to +5V at the same time, these two settings may result in conflict, hence resulting this phenomenon.
To resolve this, simply uncheck "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" for your USB mouse and PS/2 keyboard under "Device Manager", if you do not desire to wake the system via your USB mouse and/or PS/2 keyboard.
If you would like to wake your system from USB or PS/2 devices, please turn off your PC, set the appropriate USB port or PS/2 port jumper from +5V to +5VSB. Please follow the instructions in your user manual. Then your system will be able to enter and wake from standby mode as you desire."
