I had that happen to me before, I have no idea wtf caused it. All your file will be there, just the settings went back to default and all the desktop icons missing.

Windows XP home suddenly returned to original setting
For some reason, my desktop reverted back to the default setting. The wallpaper, my document files, etc all are as if I did a clean install. Even the "welcome to windows tour popped up" .
I didn't change any setting, just logged in. Anyone know what's going on and how to fix it?
I had system restore turned off - my fault.

Its possible that you typed in the wrong password and it just defaulted to a generic 'first time use' identity. Or is this now a permanent change?

Yup it's permanent and it happens everytime I restart my laptop. It goes back to the default setting, even if I login as "admin" . I guess I have to format and do a clean install of xp.
I should have bought a MAC.
