Why don't consider Canon XS with 2 lenses for $499 at Dell? A good upgrade from P&S for around $500.

I think the main question is, are you willing to spend a few more hundreds to upgrade your lens. That can easily run you into the thousands very quickly for just 2 or 3 lenses.
If you aren't planning to buy more lenses, I think you should buy a Canon G10 or a Panasonic DMC-LX3 or something along those lines.
I think you will be very disappointed with how limited you will be with your 18-55mm kit lens, in terms of how much zoom you are getting.
Only go into DSLR if you are gonna buy more lenses. Always invest in the lens, not the body as the lenses will far out last the body.
