It's not the camera that will cost you an arm and a leg because it uses a relatively simple D-SLR (4MP for each picture). It's the computers used to process/stitch the images and the extremely well calibrated moving mechanism that cost a lot, I imagine.

Gears: (from the website)
-The photos were taken automatically using a modern consumer camera and a powerful 400 mm lens
- Stitching the photos into one image required the capacity of 5 high-end pcs for three full days.
