this thread is too vague to be of any value.
-average salary in Canada for single tax filers is around $30K, so yes $55K should satisfy the "average" person
-few ppl go on to postsecondary, many go the technical school or college route
-but if you have a University degree you're more educated than "average"
-what field are we talking about? Are there lawyers getting only $55K and satisfied? How about librarians? It really depends on the field. Even if you're happy with your job, no reason you should be scammed or paid less than what you're worth.
My salary is b/w 110-130K, before nonsense like stocks, bonuses and junk gets added. Am i satisfied? No, because I'm getting paid less than my peers. Does that mean I'm not happy? Hell no, I'm happy, I'm able to meet all my needs as well as many of my wants (my gf doesn't have to work because I earn enough), I can eat out without having to worry or fret about gas prices.
I've earned 30K/yr in the past and was satisfied because I wasn't doing much work and it gave me a really flexible schedule and was competitive with the work/industry/peers.
-this thread really needs the scope narrowed to be informative
lol I always hate these threads because they make me feel like such a bum.
I make $35/year now in my chosen career and (barring any severe changes) and am not likely to hit $55/year in the foreseeable future and I still personally think I'm making fairly reasonable money but talking to the people on this site it's like I'm below the poverty line.
I have enough that I can pay all my expenses and have a fairly substantial amount left over for whatever random garbage I want to buy (I am single, have my own apt, pay my own bills BTW just so you don't think I'm living at my parent's) and it's not like I live in the middle of nowhere either. Sometimes I just think people on this site have such unreasonable expectations when it comes to finances.
Having said that, yes, obviously I would be satisfied with a 55/year salary.
How do you make 35 a year and save enough for a downpayment on an apt and also have low monthly pmts to have a significant chunk of money leftover to buy whatever u want? That is very good but it seems highly unlikely._______________

Yeah, for sure. At least for now.
I'm currently sitting at 30-35k. Ick.
55k x2 (dual income, no kids) is pretty comfortable. Can prolly rent a 1 bedroom luxury condo and probably buy a second hand entry level luxury car with enough savings for retirement/etc.
If I ever decide to have kids though, that changes everything.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked KevC for this post.

According to Living in Canada, average wage was $24.81, so X 2080 hours a year, it is $51,604.80.

I'd say $55k is a comfortable amount.
Personally, I wish I can work less and earn less._______________

Don't know if it's been posted already, but take home from 55k (assuming only tax, CPP, EI deductions is) is ~$37,500.
I tend to agree with others, for a professional, 55k by 30 is good._______________

Whoever is making less than what has been suggested here and implies as a norm, please dont take it the wrong way. Its not about how much you earn, but about how much you save and how happy and content you are with. If it settles the fundamental needs of your life then life is good, sure we all need more money and its human mentality, but dont let the odd here deter or despair you into thinking you are a failure.

That does seem to be the case, thats why Im staying out of it, this thread should have been moved to the careers section. OP would have found more reasonable, to the point feedback instead of this buffoonery._______________

Most of the time it's because they read about it on the internet.
