What kind of vehicle are you looking to buy?
If its a brand I have a solid contact for i can lend you a hand. if possible, You would pay the dealer, pick the vehicle up (or ship out if required) and complete the import yourself. This would be the most cost effective way for you.

Just FYI this is what I was told too...
This is NOT consistent with the info MM has posted here: http://monsieurmaggot.com/statesummary.html
Now I don't know which is correct.

What happened to the lawsuit?
What did the "Minister of Finance" rule about the price fixing in Canada?
I was looking at buying a new small car like Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, and was disgusted to see that I can't get one with air conditioning and automatic transmission for less than $20,000.00. There's no way that such a small car, with such a weak engine, could be that expensive. Glad I found this thread, will now look into getting it in the US. And I guess it will be Toyota, since Honda warranty won't transfer.
Anyone know what's the best deal for a new small car with auto trans. + a/c near New York/Boston... and they will sell to Canadians?

Interesting - i had even spoke to a couple of dealers who do more sales to canadians, and they told me what they do is drive the car west about three hours to the cali border and then hand over the keys to you there..or arrange a shipper that will take it out of state- or around the corner from the dealership
but can try this form with the dealer or check with the DMV there..

I dont know what to say in this situation, as im sure MM did his research prior to posting that... but i buy 30% or more of my cars in AZ and ship them out without paying state sales tax. I mean, ive even titled them in AZ without having to pay sales tax. When i do so, i need to sign an out of state buyers affidavit stating that the vehicle is not for use or registration in Arizona. Could be why...

*** WARNING ***
For those of you importing a car in the GTA. You will be importing through the Queenston/Lewiston bridge (that's your only option) -- wanted to let all of the forum members know about something they are doing at Queenston/Lewiston that is new to me.
Background: When I imported my last car, it came with a US temporary plate. This one did not, because it was from FL and they wanted to charge me 6% sales tax if I wanted a temp plate. So I went without it.
Had the car shipped up to Niagara Falls, NY and drove the few KM up to the bridge. The car was fully insured, and I had a plate that I took off my other car (I even brought the green slip for that plate). I do realize that I am not supposed to put that plate on the car I just bought, but I thought it would arise a lot less suspicion for the few km I had to drive to the bridge. For example, I wouldn't get pulled over by a cop simply because I had no plate. They would have to actually run the plate to find out there is a problem.
In either case, once I make it to the bridge, I'm home free. Or so I thought.
I ended up there at 3:30 on a Friday afternoon (they close at 4) and I had two VERY pissed off US Customs officers when I went in to get my title stamped. This is before I even opened my mouth.. they were just yelling at everyone and ordering people around rudely.
I walked up politely and told them I was importing a car, that I had sent in the VIN information by email more than a week ago (I had a copy of their response email) and that I would like to have the title stamped for export.
They ordered me outside to the car with them (which is normal) and asked "What's with the Ontario plate?" They then took me back in the office and said I wasn't allowed to drive in NY state with an Ontario plate (keep in mind I'm 40 feet from Canada at this point..... not like I was gonna drive anywhere other than to the bridge!)
Long story short, they made me call a tow truck and have it TOWED over the bridge. By the time Canada customs was done with all the RIV paperwork, I ended up paying for 2.5 hours of a flatbed tow truck + driver. Don't even ask how expensive that was!
Here's the amazing thing.. they let me go easy because I started being really nice to them and apologizing. Turns out there were THREE of us they did this two that afternoon alone. I met the other two in the parking lot.
One guy I met was waiting for a tow like me, and the other one had gone into Canada and rented a U-Haul pickup truck with a U-haul car carrier trailer on it. He came back into the US to pick up the BMW he just bought.
Thank god I was nice to them....The guy with the BMW told me that the US Customs people called the State Trooper on him and the cop came and wrote him tickets for no insurance and no license plate (he didn't have a plate on the car at all). I think he ended up with $600 in fines and had to still pay to rent the U-Haul and everything else!
They were looking at every single car, and (in my opinion) sticking their nose into what should be a NY State Troopers business, not theirs. But I guess when they're holding your passport and want to call a cop, the cop is now involved and you're screwed.
In any case, do **NOT** even think about crossing at Queenston/Lewiston with any of the following:
-License plate off another car (valid or not valid, sticker or expired sticker, doesn't matter.. no ON plate is valid unless registered to that car)
-Temporary plate from the US that is expired (most are only good for a short time.. some as short as 7 days)
-No license plate at all
Basically unless you have a fully valid license plate for that specific vehicle, you're screwed. They even made me show that the vehicle was insured (thank god I brought the pink slip with me) before they'd let me go.
Not sure if this was just two pissed off customs officers on a Friday afternoon or not, but maybe this is their new way of operating.
Either way, three of us learned a very painful lesson that afternoon and I'm sure it's still going on... so BE WARNED!
Hope this is of value to forum members.. I wanted to try and help out the forum to make sure nobody else ever has to go through what I did!
(and yes, before everyone tells me, that plate was not valid on that car. But being 50 feet from the bridge I didn't exactly think a valid license plate was a concern to a federal agency... apparently it is. They spent more time looking at the license plate than at the title document they were supposed to be verifying!)

So you're amazed that US Border was concerned about a car being exported with invalid plates?
Be glad they didn't impound it, you're quite lucky and earned all your fines/fees 100%. Hopefully someone else can learn from your brutal mistakes.

Actually, yes, I'm amazed that a US federal agency is concerned with a state responsibility.
You can drive the car into Canada with no plates on it at all, say it is being imported, and CBSA won't even blink an eye. It's not their jurisdiction. I guess if you mouthed off to them they could decide to call the OPP and get you in trouble, but I have never heard of that happening.
Just wanted to alert others to the fact that a federal US agency is taking the liberty of enforcing someone else's rules (NY state in this case) just to hassle people.
YES, I admit the car wasn't plated properly, but NO they really shouldn't have done anything about it. YES they do have the right to. They also have the right to call the EPA who can fine me for not washing the car and bringing debris/dirt across a boarder, the FDA for the small piece of orange peel that was in the door pocket (import/export of fruits and vegetables) and they probably could have also fined me for the can of Coke I had in the console which was technically undeclared and therefore smuggled goods.
Regarding impounding, NO they couldn't have done that. US Customs can't impound a car for EXITING the country, only ENTERING. Yes, CBSA certainly could have impounded it but US Customs could not, because the key here is that I did not violate any US Customs rules. The rule I violated was the NY State Troopers concern, not US Customs. What do you believe the basis would be for US Customs to impound the car??
