LOL, Xbox 360:
A box isn't really 360 degrees, So it's now the X-Circle or Sphere.

My point was simply that PS3 is hardly a shoe in to win the next round of the console wars here.

at this point, we're all speculating when it comes to the Specs of both pieces of hardware.
as I am a non-console-person, i couldn't care less who "wins" since *I* lose in both cases (more game developers stop making PC games and move to the console market!)
we don't know which group within IBM is making the Core - but we have to assume they have inside knowledge of the PowerPC architecture, and perhaps are even using members of the PowerPC team. in which case, i'd expect them to set a goal of surpassing the previous generation of CPUs - and use all their resources to accomplish it.
my interest in the console market only goes as far as wishing the Xbox2 would come out sooner, so we can start seeing PC Video cards based upon the R500.
ultimately, even the next generation of consoles will see Sony maintain the *worldwide* lead in sales... i predict it'll be another 2 iterations of "console wars" before MS can hope to take a lead in this respect. either that or at some point they'll admit defeat and bow out of the console market.
perhaps consoles will become irrelevant once they make DVD players/STBs "intelligent" and powerful enough.

Feb 6th, 2005 12:12 PM #21Actually quite the opposite. word amongs the developers is that the PS3 will have the most muscle during the next generation of consoles. I dont really care much about the CELL aspect of the PS3, Im more interested in what Nvidia is cooking up for the GPU. I hope its feature set is leaps and bounds above the 6 series.

I was reading abotu the Cell cpu the other day and it sounds interesting, although I'm not sure about the whole idea of sharing cpu power over a network, I mean I'm just curious to see how well that would work. I really think Sony is going to focus strongly on the Cell's ability to protect copyrighted material, but from what I've read it uses up a lot of resources so I'm curious to see where Sony goes with that.
As for Microsoft, I think for their first system, they did do a pretty good job. I mean most people were ready to write them off from day one but when you consider that they got into the game late, where new to consoles and had to work to get developers to actually invest in creating content for their machine I think they did a good job. Just think about all the otehr consoles that failed from more established brands in the console market such as Atari, Sega and Neo Geo.
I really think Nintendo could surprise a lot of people though, as IMO they're really isn't that much hype around Nintendo's next system as it seems most people are focused on what Sony and MS have planned.
Either way, I think this is all great news for gamers. The next gen consoles are really fighting for our dollars, so hopefully Sony, Nintendo and MS will put out some great and innovative hardware. If one system offers an exceptional gaming experience over the otehr, then I'll buy that one and won't really care who makes it. I think we should really be concerned with the game developers and that they push themselves to put out quality and innovative titles.

Feb 6th, 2005 08:45 PM #23Problem is no hype = no 3rd Party support. This has killed Nintendo since the N64 days. Ya they're still profitable but 3rd place may not be such a great place to be in the long run.
