If only Macs could play HD-DVDs, I'd have snapped one long ago. No worries though, Blu-ray is the dead standard.

Especially compared to all those people in the US who bought it from Bestbuy for $150 USD and got King Kong bundled with it, and then the 5 free movie mail in offer.
BinaryJay:
I don't know why anyone would think HD DVD is a dying format? I mean, just last week they managed to bring their movie sales back up to 1/2 of Blu-Ray's (the week before had HD DVD selling 1/3 of Blu-Ray's... although the rest of the year has been a steady 2:1 for Blu-Ray). And the fact that Target (the second largest retail presence in the USA) has now pulled all the HD DVD player stand alones they had been selling on their webpage is not at all a sign of things to come. Nor the fact that Weinstein unofficially announced their format neutrality at Comicon this year with the statement that the movies from Grindhouse will be released on Blu-Ray. Thus leaving Universal as the only major or minor studio exclusive to HD DVD (who has openly admitted at Comicon that General Electric, the company that owns a controlling stake in them, is pressuring them to go neutral). Nope, all is well with HD DVD...
That being said, those who don't have Ameri-friends who can help them take advantage of the mail in offer for free movies, this is probably the cheapest way for people to buy into HD DVD. But I hope before anyone buys into a HiDef format (either one) they look very hard at what's available and what's NOT available on the format you're considering. Also, looking at the sales figures for both formats is a good idea too:
http://forums.highdefdigest.com/showthread.php?t=10996
The above post is updated every Friday with the latest figures provided by Nielsen Videoscan, posted in Home Media Magezine. It's an unbiased 3rd party source.
And finally.... remember these words of truth:
If you want to be an early adopter (of either HiDef format), the only guarentee is that you *WILL* get screwed over. If your format doesn't fail eventually, you're at LEAST going to be spending 2-5 times (or more) to get it early, then the price of the product will be when it goes mainstream._______________

All this **** talking about HD-DVD, jeeez
I own a 360 and a HD-DVD player, my Hd TV, sound system and amp cost me about 4.5Gz, so spending $200 on a High Def Player...which may or may not be 'the winning format' does bother me one bit! Honestly, Planet Earth Hd-DVD was well worth the investment, if in two years Blu-ray wins, i'll just buy a cheap blu-ray player (probably for $200)! Big deal!
