XEON gaming rig options.

ok who's dabbled with this and what works??
been looking this up for all week.
i am eyeing the xeon e3 1230 v3 as a possible cpu choice.
but before i start dabbling i wanted others thoughts and opinions from those who have done this before.

Why do you want to go with this Xeon processor over singing like an 8700?

As a drop in replacement if you already have a LGA1150 mobo.

You are going to have to get an LGA1150 board.
For that board, an i7 4770 or even i5 4690 (k or non k) is a better CPU for gaming.
Unless you can get this xeon for much cheaper than any of those, I see no point

Link? There's no such E3-1230 V3 for $25. Maybe some old Xeon X series maybe

Have a look at the Plex Reddit. They have daily/weekly hardware build threads that normally centre around these processors. I have never found decent motherboard options though that ship to Canada. If you have access to the boarder or friends I am sure you will find something

I did. And there was no such thing. Unless you bought something else. Attached screenshots from both ebay and aliexpress, sorted by price.
So no, I don't believe you bought for $48 shipped. Prove it

For gaming? It's kind of pointless and expensive

Xeons are better binned CPU's that are set aside for the business product line and have more features enabled in them (ECC ram support, etc). Some preferred them as you can get some models without intel GPU active which results in less heat generation from the CPU (such as the E3-1230v3). In the real world the difference may be negligible. When released the E3-1230v3 was highly sought after as it was a 4c8t that went for around the same price as the i5 series and was cheaper then the i7 series.

You'll need a motherboard that supports them as well (plus ecc if you are also going that route).

People had gone crazy after the barebone servers (Lenovo TS140 & Dell T20/T30) over the past few years given you could get them in the US for $280 US (for xeon version) and made it a cheap way to get a quality low/midrange gaming system.

Be careful with Xeons. They (or at least some) got MURDERED by the Spectre/meltdown mitigations in Windows. You can disable them via regedit, but if you don't, you could be losing out of 40% of your performance.
