Still have a pc with windows 98 dual boot with XP and that box was upgraded from one that had Windows 3.1. Local shop in Scarborough put in newer components as needed. This goes back to about 1996/7 can't remember but win 98 came out in 1998.

Actually still use it from time to time to d/l torrents or test software I might be concerned could have virus.

LOL @ this thread.

yeah in my basement i still have my 1st comp.. 350mhz with 40gb HDD. I used to pimp it around like a pro back in the day, and it still works if needed.
Of course, nowadays my cellphone is faster than that but that's another story.

I've got an old Dell 8250 that looks just like the OP's, I think it's about 7 years old. P4 2.4, 0.5 GB Rambus Ram - worked great always, powered on 24/7 for almost the full period. It still surfed and ran Photoshop fine, the original ATI graphics card did DVI so I updated from two 19" CRTs to an LCD monitor. Near the end the graphics chip fan seized up, but I was able to fix it.

AND THEN... it got a drive-by Trojan Horse boot sector virus while hunting for torrents on isohunt - tough to get rid of - I think someone embedded the virus startup code in some Java in an unclicked advertising link and it installed further using the Adobe PDF viewer which had an unpatched security hole. I could fix it - could do with a new HD anyway to be extra-safe, but the ram size is so small by current standards and Rambus Ram is very expensive, so I just switched to my notebook, which runs great and is about 6 years old.

Question i need to know from you guys if I got majorly ripped off. The year was sometime in early 98 or late 97. I can't remember. This was the very 1st time purchasing a computer, and knew nothing about them.

What I got was a if I vaguely remember was a 486 dx66 16 Meg rem, ati rage 2 mb, 340 mb hdd, cd rom and floppy. All for $1365.00.

Was that a good deal at the time or did I get jipped big time?

Not sure if that was good or not, but I remember getting a NEC Pentium 2 computer with a 15 inch CRT for like 4000 in that time period.

I've got an old Dimension 8400 that I'm using as a torrent seedbox. Had to change its cpu heatsink for the notorious "jumbo jet syndrome". I believe the unit is from late 2004.

Just 'retired' a 486-DX that was running the sign at my church. It had - if memory serves - 8mb of EDO RAM, Win 95, 66mhz processor ... I think the HDD was upgraded to a few hundred megs at some point.

it was a gift from a family member and I just could not bring myself to disposing of this historical; piece. Spent ~$20 in replacing the cpu heatsink. Actually, Jumbo Jet may very well be an understatement as this the fan could spool up to its max of 3600 RPM.Did so much reading and turns out the copper plate on the heatsink was warped due to poor hear transfer of its coil. Dell knows about it but will not help you. Should I be surprised?
