Zellers: Tide 64 loads clearance @ $8.00 (to Aug 1st)
Saw this at my local Zellers in Longueuil (ch. Chambly); might be this location only so YMMV. They are getting rid of those big formats to make room for 2X Tide; these are the larger, somewhat refillable bottles that you rest on their side and look like hybrids between a plastic fuel tank and a wine box. Only two "smells" at my local store: Nature/Free (plenty) and Mountain Spring (almost sold out). Bought myself 3 containers!

Washing machine savings math:
New 2X Tide @ Zellers (normal price) 32 loads: 8.97 = 28 cents per load
Tide 32 loads when on good special: 5.99 = 18.7 cents per load
Old Tide 64 loads (clearance): 8.00 = 12.5 cents per load
Cheaper too if you use those Brand Saver 1$/off any Tide coupons.

I really don't like these x2 soaps. Seems like a scam imo... more detergant would circulate the washing machine better wouldn't it?

The real scam is that they made the packages smaller. Making a more concentrated product isn't "green" if you also cut the package size in half.
You end up using more packaging than you did before because the ratio between packaging to volume increases as container size decreases.
Same number of loads in a package half the size == more packaging per load.
That isn't very environmentally friendly, yet they market it as a "green" change to the product.

Darn, I just went to a neighboring Zellers in Greenfield Park and those large 64 loads containers were marked $11.99 instead, so that $8 deal may be local after all. Mind you, 12 bucks is still a good (warm) price at 18.7 cents per load though.

I do believe you mean to say "The packaging to product ratio increases" as you mentioned in regards to volume.
If you need to do 32 loads now, the amount of packaging required to give you that many loads is say 100g, versus the 200g required to package 32 loads of old 1X concentrated Tide.
So in the end, the "packaging to load ratio" does decrease making it "greener".
And great deal, hopefully my zellers has it!

It doesn't have to be half.
My point is that it uses more material for the same number of loads.
If you increase the concentration and put less soap in each box -- keeping the number of wash loads constant, but using smaller boxes -- you end up using more packaging than you did before.
I don't really mind the change all that much. I mean, they've always had small boxes and big boxes, so it isn't really that different.
What bugs me is that they advertise the smaller box as an environmentally friendly change, when it is actually worse for the environment, at least in terms of packaging.
