I bought the exact same mug (SM-SA60-BA) on December of 2015 for $50 for a loved one. The mug is still working well to this date! In-between that time and now I've also bought a couple of Contigo two packs from Costco for $15.99-19.99 for myself thinking I wouldn't want to spend another $40 + on 1 mug. The issue is that they do not retain the heat. Most importantly, they retain an awful smell even when they are washed on a regular basis.

In this case, you do get what you pay for. The Zoji mugs keeps your drink hot for a VERY LONG TIME. Cheap mugs simply don't.

In regards to the difference between models, I found the following information on the official website (refer to images). I believe the older version (SM-SA60-BA with "non stick coating) is more effective as compared to the newer SM-KHE48 model.

Have a good one!

If scratches are made inside when washing the bottle, the whole thing becomes useless.

Wash it with a sponge and it will last many years. Abuse it and like most things it will become useless. That said, it takes a lot to rub the inside coating off and even if it gets scratched it doesn't affect the way it keeps liquids hot or cold and it doesn't keep chipping or peeling either.

Maybe I just drink a lot of liquids, but does it actually take people 12+ hours to drink 2.5 cups? I feel there comes a point where the heat retention becomes irrelevant without a size increase.

You've never made coffee in the morning during winter, had to rush off to work before enjoying your coffee at home, drove to work and put your coffee in your cupholder, forgotten to take the coffee with you into the office, come back to your car after a long energy-sapping 10 hour work day, got stopped by a drugged-up car jacker on the drive home, and had to quickly find a weapon (e.g. 500ml of scalding coffee) to fend him off?

I find that hard to believe.

I dunno... A block of frozen coffee might be a better weapon than scalding coffee in the winter...
