149$ for 10 Steaks, from Costco.ca, did I get a good deal?

BOUGHT Springvale New Zealand Boneless Beef Rib Steaks 290 g (0.64 lb) x 10-pack from Costco.ca

original price is 189$
discount is 40$
so the final price is 149$

because I rarely visit the Costco warehouse, I don't know how much it costs to purchase steaks in-store.

there is lot of overhead shopping online, especially for fresh products like meat because they need to be shipped in fancy containers with dry ice, using UPS, which increases the cost dramatically.

because the box is heavy, I suspect the shipping cost for Costco.ca would be something like 50$.

so all in all, my understanding is it is impossible to get a TRUE GOOD DEAL online shipping for meat/seafood because the additional cost is too high for fresh products.

Costco meat is good but not cheap also I highly doubt that they pay $50 for shipping. You are looking at $15/small steak so deal is good only if makes you happy, personally to me its expensive.

the quality is good, but the price is indeed a bit much due to the shipping cost and container cost

I say it's a bad deal because the beef is from New Zealand.
I'm a proud Canadian who supports the cattle ranchers out in Alberta.

I did buy 5 boxes of wagyu steaks locally produced in Alberta last year, because it was wagyu beef, it was even more expensive, 25$ per steak, 8oz.

So many things wrong here … IMO
In regards to buying steaks @ Costco

First … I agree with @pootza
Why would you buy New Zealand Beef
When Canada has what’s considered some of the best beef in the world = Alberta Beef

New Zealand Lamb … I could understand
But not Beef

2nd … if I recall correctly these steaks come in a box frozen vs fresh
Fresh is always better than frozen
Even tho we buy steaks 3 or 4 at a time in a pkg
And freeze some
We never miss the opportunity to have a fresh steak that first night we bring them home

Price wise …
Shipped groceries (or Instacart for Delivery) is perhaps a convenience
But it’s not cheap
It’s a very expensive way to buy food

Overall value …
$ 15 a fresh steak is about the max I’d pay for FRESH AAA Cdn Prime strip loin steak @ Costco (8 ounce steak )
Occasionally they’ll go on sale
And I pay less

And … if I was to buy the roast … and cut my own *
It would be even cheaper

* Costco Meat Dept encourages this
They even have a printed meat cutting guide so their customers can save even more money

This is the kind of question you ask before you buy something, not after. If people say you didn't get a good deal what are you going to do - feed the steaks to your dog and go in the corner and sulk? I consider it a complete waste of time to be asking these kinds of questions after the fact.

You've got the steaks now, just enjoy them.

TBH I don't even get why everyone loves NZ lamb.
It's so "sanitized" (ie trimmed) to remove so much fat that it has no real lamb flavor.
Get a good domestic lamb (Alberta again lol) that has a lot of the trim intact and it's delicious assuming you like lamb flavor.
NZ lamb is like the boneless skinless of the lamb world. It's extremely mild so it's appealing to basically everyone.
I want to know I'm eating a lamb.

This. I never freeze my steaks at home because a home freezer is too slow.
I have a blast freezer but even then I still don't.
Do you not have anything else to do rather than argue with strangers on the internet
Nope. That's why I'm on the internet arguing with strangers. If I had anything better to do I'd probably be doing it.

Some ppl can't handle and just don't want the [gamier] lamb. In some cases, one in the family likes gamier lamb and others don't so the compromise is to buy the less gamey stuff. That's just how it is.

We can say the same about boneless skinless chicken breast in many cases and yet there are ppl who want it.

Exactly what I was wondering. "I just married this woman...did I get a good deal?"

Do your research first. :)

I don't disagree by any stretch, but why a compromise? I'll get a lamb, make it for whoever, and fry up a boneless skinless or someone else lol.

I didn't think beef outside of Japan could be considered Wagyu.

As long as the cattle is one of the four Wagyu breeds, it can be called Wagyu. Australia is pretty well known for its it's Wagyu, for example

Wagyu simply specifies a certain breed of Japanese cow. I guess they can be flown outside the country, but for wagyu beef certifications, they need to fulfill some conditions and being raised in Japan is one of them. While other countries claim to have wagyu, it's usually cross breeds with Angus here in NA. No wagyu beef is produced outside of Japan.

Yes, cattle could be called wagyu , but their beef isn't certified wagyu and can't be sold as such. Same as greek feta cheese having certain conditions to be called such, one being that it must be produced in Greece.

It's less than $20 for expedited. Otherwise, Costco would never be able to sell and ship a bag of 10kg flour for $14.99 online.
