Depends what you're using it for. I've got 40GB and will probably jump to 64 soon.

Just curious, but what do you do that needs so much ram (I am honestly not sure which software might use a ton of ram these days)?

I have 16 GB in my desktop and that seems to be fine for what I do. I play a few games, like GTA V (720p) & Batman Arkham City and mostly just surfing the web. I wanted to upgrade to 32 GB just in case but I don't think I need it.

Cinema 4D 3D modelling and rendering takes up a ton of RAM, caching all the shaders for renders, etc. Plus, Photoshop open as well.

My machine are slow (E5 Xeon) but can you give me the link to some trial ware? Have 2 machines with 128 GB each (RDIMMs obtained cheap) and would love to see mem usage go above 25%

I have 32gb because I wanted dual rank. Sometimes people want to squeeze more performance but really depends what you use it for. I think 32gb is a nice sweet spot.

I have 32 Gigs and my typical RAM usage is about 14-17 Gigs

No rendering, just some coding and about 500 tabs open over 4 browser windows.

I think the sweet spot for most people is 16 Gigs on a desktop

I believe they have a demo on their site but you'd still need to model/texture/render a complex scene to eat up the RAM.

I think 16 is becoming the new norm due to smaller kits being less profitable.

If you don't have any ram intensive tasks in mind, I'd go with 16.

I'll give it a try this weekend and let you know. My computer is about 10 years old so it's not fast but I guess it'll give you an idea.

I had 16, then saw a deal on another 16 since the brand I have is being discontinued so I figured I might as well do it now just in case I can't find compatible RAM later.

32 is definitely overkill for me right now.

Maybe I should have 500 tabs open for the hell of it?

Mix of old and new stock.

3200CL16 and 3600CL18 are older.

But honestly, it's not worth spending extra on faster RAM unless you're trying to game on the iGPU.
The value isn't there.

Depends on what the price difference is.

If it's a board with four slots, you may opt to start with 2x8GB, keeping the above in mind.

Since you don't know, I would think that 16 is enough.

I have 16GB in my DELL desktop, but it's struggling as I have millions of tabs open + apps.

Next Desktop will definitely have a min of 32GB, more likely 64GB.

I have 16 in my PC and it seems find. Don't seem to run into any memory shortages or problems. Mostly used for browsing or gaming.

It's a few years old though. If I was upgrading to a new PC I'd probably go to 32gb to future proof it for the next few years kind of thing.

Honestly no such thing as too much RAM; at worst case you have unused capacity that doesn't hurt you (unlike running out of RAM) - so buy as much as you can reasonably afford.

Right now 16GB is a decent happy medium for most users, 8GB should be considered the minimum. 32GB+ is quite a lot for most users, but should provide a comfortable amount of headroom for a long time.
