1993 Corolla hits 2 million Kms on original transmission and engine

The legendary Toyota Corolla strikes again

Graeme Hebley and his 1993 Toyota Corolla have just surpassed a very significant milestone in the last few weeks.

A newspaper delivery contractor since the 1960s, Hebley's Corolla ticked over the two million kilometre mark earlier in the month.

Hebley, who lives in Upper Hutt, drives from Wellington up to New Plymouth and back six days a week for his job, which includes delivering the Whanganui Chronicle.

His connection to Whanganui is through Guthrie's Auto Care, which has serviced his Corolla every two weeks for the last 22 years.

Hebley averages around 5000km per week, hence why he gets it serviced every fortnight.

Besides general and frequent servicing, there hasn't been a whole lot of changes made to the Toyota.

The cambelt has been replaced almost 20 times and wheel bearings changed, but besides that the car is basically original.

"It still has the original engine and transmission," said Guthrie's John Sherman.

"If I hadn't worked on it, I wouldn't believe it. I wouldn't believe it could do two million without something going wrong."

Hebley got the 1993 Toyota Corolla in 2000; it had only done 80,000 kilometres at that point.
It'll probably get $1k or more in today's crazy used car market lol

Note that he gets the car serviced every 2 weeks. I assume that means an oil change at least since he puts on 10,000 km every 2 weeks.

Hebley got the 1993 Toyota Corolla in 2000 and it had only done 80,000km at that point.
He got it just after the break-in period
When given enough time, all threads on RFD can and will go off on a tangent.

Living in an area with no winters and road salt helps a lot too.

was it the 1zz after? those were pretty good/reliable i thought.

i had a 1ZZ-FE that lasted well over 180000km with redline everyday (back then, you can hit 200km/h+ on 404 basically north of steeles due to little traffic lol) and only conventional oil changes

and i think it was also used in the 2003 (I think that's when corolla was redesigned?) and corolla basically became the default driver's ed car lol

Sweet. My biege is currently at 360k. Aside from updating the brakes, I've had to do zero repairs. For $500 6 years ago, best investment ever

Wonder if Toyota will replace his Corolla for free with the hybrid one.

While I'm happy to own a Corolla this story is just horrible and sad.

Horrible because how heavily he's contributing to climate change. This guy drives more in a month than I do in an entire year.

Sad because he drives over 800km a day, that's 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. The sixth day he's getting his car repaired. What kind of life is that.

All this for newspapers! When the internet has the same information. Who's this helping?

^ At least he is making some money from the publicity.

Many here, including I, would die for a side hustle LOL.

I plan to do this with my 19 Civic. Highly unlikely since its not made in Japan. Hoping I can take it to 500kms but it will be a huge challenge with high gas prices, a really short commute and working from home.

It’s because my friends dad is a driving instructor I know how durable the old Corolla were. They had one like the one you posted with over 500,000kms on it. They do routine maintenance like clockwork. They then had a the gen after and burned oil like no tomorrow (I think they had 3 of them in the fleet. I can’t remember exactly what the issue was, but something to do with the cylinder design.

People drive for a living all over the world. At least this guy is not buying a new car every few years.

Guy I know did 650k on a Crown Vic, in Winter, road salt, in Ontario. Nobody would take the car afterwards, even though it ran well and wasn't rusted out. Went right to the junk yard.

Highway Mileage is where it's at... you can pile on a ton of miles if you are on the highway/express way all the time.

After about 200k your vehicle is almost un-sellable and goes to a side lot with other well used junk, why even brag about this anymore? A 93' Corolla with 75k on it is worth less than a $1000. I'd say the guy needs a new car.
