2,500+ sign up for Quebec group-buy for Nissan LEAF electric vehicle

From Electrek:
Marcoux got the idea from the successful group buy of 248 by the South West Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP) earlier this year in Colorado.

The organization managed to get a significant discount of $8,349 on the LEAF. Both Nissan America and the local dealership contributed to the discount, and combined with both state and federal tax credits, the price came down to a more than reasonable $12,130.

After his initiative was featured in La Presse, the biggest newspaper in Quebec, and Roulez Electrique, a blog covering electric vehicles in the nation, sign-ups for the group buy shattered expectations and reached over 2,500 as of today.

The LEAF S with a 24 kWh battery pack starts at $32,698 and the SV with a 30 kWh battery pack starts at $37,398. Considering Quebec offers a $8,000 rebate, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the entry price fall below $20,000 CAD.

Marcoux is reportedly in negotiations with Nissan Canada.

Do they realise in a year time, the new 300km Leaf will come out? Why get one with half the range, and older battery management. Granted it will be more expensive, but double range and better battery management, especially for environment, is a big jump in this juvenile tech industry.

From the article:
Marcoux told us that at the moment Nissan could likely only secure a price for about 1,500 2016 LEAFs and the balance would need to be covered by the upcoming 2017 model – though with a smaller discount.

Not to derail the thread too much but it's highly unlikely that any Canadians will see deliveries in 2017 given the priority of orders (employees, existing owners, west to east, USA first, etc.).

I am sure many registered because of the press the group got, but do not intend to buy / will back out / will find the discount not enough / etc.

I would be really surprised if they sell more than 1,500 that Nissan can secure...

Just wondering that "Quebec offers a $8,000 rebate".
Why Provincial and Federal governments are giving rebates for electric cars and Introducing carbon tax simultaneously. If they really worry about green house gases..they should pay some sort of income tax rebate for vegetarians and vegans too.
There are way more vegetarians and vegans than electric car owners.

LOL as expected. The group buy was actually over 3,700 people. By the way, Nissan sells a total of roughly 3,800 LEAF in Canada from 2011 until now. Nissan is not serious about EV; no company in their right mind would refuse to negotiate a discount if someone is ordering 5 year worth of sales at once.

nissan must be really confident in their next gen leaf for them to write off all those potential people willing to buy this ugly toad.

Then again Nissan may not have the supply to meet the demand. I've been trying to see some 2016 models the last few months with no luck from dealers that had a ton of '14 & '15 models in the past. Did Nissan make so few of them anticipating that most will wait for the Gen 2 LEAF's? With a much higher price?
Up votes, down votes, they're all votes for me! I thank you!
