2015 Acura TLX SH-AWD with Tech vs 2016 Nissan Maxima SR

I've driven both vehicles so this is my own short comparison for you guys. The Nissan Maxima belongs to my dad. I spent 5 hours in the Maxima yesterday, with 1.5 hours driving it and the rest being a passenger. I'll go through the main things. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Powertrain - Winner: Maxima

Not going to be talking numbers but rather how it feels. This is comparing both vehicles in the "Normal" driving mode.

So first off, the Maxima's VQ35 engine sounds great as always and very responsive despite having a CVT transmission. I still don't like CVTs but this is a well programmed CVT and I certainly wouldn't mind driving it on a daily basis. Very rarely you'll catch the CVT slipping but sometimes the CVT does cause the vehicle to shake in extreme cases. Throttle is very linear and definitely doesn't lag unlike the TLX where the majority of the lag is due to the ZF 9 speed automatic. Fuel efficiency on the highway is more or less equal I would say, with the Maxima being slightly worse than the TLX. With regards to engine NVH, I'd say the TLX is smoother.

Interior - Winner: Maxima

It might be I still haven't found the perfect driving position yet but the seats in the Maxima are more comfortable than the TLX. For long trips, I start to feel a bit uncomfortable in the TLX but not in the Maxima. It's bolstered well to hold me in place during spirited driving and highway ramp tackling but when cruising, you don't feel like you're being pinched and surrounded. The infotainment system is a touch screen that is very vibrant and easy to use. I didn't get to play with it but it seems there aren't nearly as much menus in the Maxima as in the TLX. Best of all, I have dedicated hardware controls in the Maxima compared to the TLX, so I can easily control the AC, temperature, how to blow the air, all that jazz without having to look at the screen. On the dash alone, the Maxima has a nice, large screen that can display tons of information which the TLX can't. Again I didn't get to play with it much but I do remember going through the menus and it's pretty slick. Did I mention that the Nissan Connect infotainment system is much more responsive than the TLX?

The Nissan Maxima also comes with heated and ventilated seats!

Styling - Winner: Maxima

The Maxima looks great compared to the TLX. Side by side, the TLX looks dull and boring.

Chassis - Winner: 50/50

From a spirited driving point of view, the Maxima wins. The SR is the sport version of the Maxima meaning it has stiffer springs and shocks. It also comes with 19" Goodyear F1 all season tires which certainly helps in that department. However the trade off is higher interior noise compared to the TLX. The TLX is supple and very quiet. For daily driving, the chassis of the TLX is not as bumpy due to the softer suspension tuning and those crappy Goodyear Eagle LS-2 tires. The steering in the TLX is a lot lighter than the Maxima but you adjust fairly quickly. Steering feel goes to Nissan.

Overall - Winner: Nissan Maxima SR

The Nissan Maxima SR is the winner in my opinion. The TLX is good but the Maxima felt better. The Maxima SR is a bit of a niche. Sporty FWD sedan with the comfort to back it up (for my father and I). It's also a lot cheaper than the Acura TLX SH-AWD. This is most likely the reason why there's so much more new Nissan Maximas on the road today.

That's the one thing a lot of people don't like about the SR. I myself wouldn't mind since the sunroof compromises rigidity, adds weight, and decreases headroom.

Yup. The stiffer suspension on the SR definitely makes it handle a lot more tightly. Taking the same ramps with the TLX, I can feel the weight shift and honestly don't feel all that confident I'd be able to stick on the road. Found myself understeering in the TLX a few times, partially due to the crappy Goodyear Eagle LS-2 tires. The SH-AWD does help as you would expect but the suspension is too soft for my tastes.

if either car came with a 6 speed manual now that would be a big plus in my books!

Yes.for sure...I just tested 2016 TLX AWD SLH last week...I owned 5 Maximas from 1998 to 2009.....the last 2 gens of Max are BOATS!..not even interested in trying them for this reason and 2 others....build quality/resale value...the current and prev gen Maximas are no better than your average family sedan on both fronts and the Acura completely destroys the Max on both fronts.

Styling???meh...too subjective....I prefer the TLX over the Max...but I will agree it is more boring than some.....which is why top of my list to replace my 2013 ATS 2.0 AWD lease is the upcoming 2017 A5...which I will also lease, then return after 48 mths so as not to be subjected to Audi's questionable long term reliability...

Agreed. Many wrote off the Nissan Maxima for the same reasons as you. But if you try the 2016 I think you'd be in for a nice surprise. The build quality is definitely there and it's the TLX that feels like a boat, not the Maxima. Having a curb weight of 1710kg for our TLX certainly doesn't help, as does the softer suspension tuning.

Perhaps...just not interested in the styling or mediocre build quality of Nissan products coming out of the USA in the past 10+yrs....have owned 10 Nissan products since 1998 and mid to long term repair costs have increased steadily over that time...I am not looking for a really stiff sporty ride...have that with my ATS...not a priority...otherwise I would be going with BMW M235 or S5.....the only option that might turn me away from A5 is the new Q60...depends upon pricing when my lease expires in 2017..

On a side note..I tried a new IS350 the same day as the TLX...quick car, great handling but ride and sport seats too harsh for my 48 yr old arse..

Only thing maxima is known for is going straight fast. But with CVT, there are lot of mix review on its 1/4 mile time.

Regardless, I would choose the new maxima then glorified accord.

I don't get it, if OP owns a TLX (which is what he alludes to in his post and replies), how can he make a claim like:
Styling - Winner: Maxima

The Maxima looks great compared to the TLX. Side by side, the TLX looks dull and boring.
If it's such a dull, boring looking car, why did you buy it?!

Mind you, I actually agree with that conclusion but personally I find most Acuras hideous looking inside and out for the past 10+ years or so.

I wouldn't say the TLX is a glorified Accord. It's a lot better than the Accord in almost every way, from the quality of the vehicle to materials used and everything in between. Save for the infotainment system in which the new Accord has Android Auto and Apple Carplay now. You actually pay for what you get with the TLX unlike the ILX.

Notice how I said our, and not mine? Or I think I did. Either way it's no secret the car isn't mine but it's a family vehicle. My mom chose it. There was also this crazy deal which factored into the vehicle purchase decision back then.

Acura screwed up the TLX with that garbage 9-speed ZF transmission

It'd be a much better car with a better tuned transmission and stiffer suspension
