Thanks Just won 1000 points instant win. Surprised the heck out of me as I never win anything on the shoppers contest.

Same.

For the record, loading, removing and reloading offers doesn't result in more plays...

Thank you.

This should be cross-posted to Freebies because it is a hybrid of the contest + random freebie genres.

I instantly won 3x 1000 points in one play session using 28 tries. The instant win seems to happen most (or only) on the bottom row of the pyramid. Seems like the chance is 1 in 6 + whomever snatches up the offer based on the time-stamp release (according to the FAQ.)

1, 2, or 3 instant wins out of 28 tries almost makes it a matter of when - and not if - someone will get a 1k points instant prize.

I'm pretty happy - and will be playing this game daily for sure.

Just because you won? My mom played all 10+ of her plays spread out over this early morning and won nothing, so it's not a guaranteed freebie...it's a contest.

Hmm... 27 more days in the "contest."

How many plays per day is that (that may or may not carry over to the next day if unused) ? How many plays is that after 27 days with offers loaded every week? That's not including easily reaching the top of the pyramid the first time which awards 10 more plays, and the other badge collections that also give more plays.

If your mom can't get one 1k instant win in 27 days consider her very unlucky. Obviously it's not a guaranteed thing if we're isolating down to one day as a "daily" contest - but the chances over a month are not as slim as winning the Lotto Max $50 million. Geez.

Statistics and probability.

Let's say you get 100 chances to flip a coin and get an instant prize of a thousand dollars only if it lands on heads three times in a row. If it lands on tails, you win an entry into a draw for a million dollars, competing with thousands of other people. At first, it lands on tails four times in a row. That's four free entries into the million dollar draw. Are you going to walk away from this "contest" or are you probably going to win an instant prize of a thousand dollars (maybe even more than once) sometime in the remaining 96 plays?

My extended family already won a combined 23k in free points since the "contest" started - most play after midnight when there are less people online for the instant prize time stamps. But you keep believing what you want, mmm kay? Less competition for us in scrambling for the instant 1k wins.

Even 1 instant win in 50 tries, as experienced by the poster above, is still crossing over into freebie territory. That's 1,000 points and 50 tries he or she got for free. And there are 36 days left that contain 50 tries many times over.

You can go by any technical definition you want - we'll just watch our free points and balances periodically rack up until July 15th.

Let's say you get 20 chances to flip a coin and get a million dollars only if it lands on heads two times in a row. It lands on tails 4 or 5 times in a row. Are you going to walk away from this "contest" or are you probably going to win sometime in the next 15 tries?

It doesn't matter how great the odds are. The point is you're not guaranteed to win every time you enter, and that makes it a contest and not a freebie. No one is denying that the chance of winning is very good, although entering after midnight is also drastically increasing your chances. :D

I agree with you, but I think it's a matter of semantics. If someone jumps off a 10th floor balcony, that person's chance to live is very slim. But I wouldn't call it a contest to die.

The strict categorization of this thread is one example, to me, of how "rules" - introduced to maintain the order and structure of forums formed over a decade ago - are in some ways actually detrimental instead of helpful to the community.

My point is that there might be SDM Optimum aficionados who may never go into the Contests forum nor look deeper into the mechanics of this contest's game play, because they assume that it's strictly a random draw / entry type affair like the majority of the other threads on the first few pages. That's exactly the impression I got from the first post... without word of mouth from family members to inform me otherwise.

But many Optimum collectors may be very interested in instant free points without the "random draw from entries" component.

They may not even be aware that, as you admit, "the chance of winning [an instant prize] is very good" [sic] .

In fact, there is no mention at all of 1k point instant wins in the title nor the first post. A few posters inside this thread are replying from the perspective of someone who is already a Contests forum enthusiast, and so has the tools to analyse and is receptive to all variants of contests.

At its heart, it is a contest, but with game play spread out over a month and a plethora of chances to play - hidden inside the heart of that month are freebies in spirit. I understand that this is not guaranteed - the supply of the sponsored 1k instant wins may not be static, and may run out or become more sparsely distributed as the contest progresses. But this early on - the odds are very good indeed.

Some people may give up after one day of playing and entering the draws, not knowing about the instant wins at all.

Other people may be collectively missing out on potentially tens of thousands of free points because they don't know just how easy it is to incidentally win 1k instantly and repeatedly... until they enter or hear word of mouth about a contest marketed as - and centred around - participating daily for entries towards random draws.

The more the days pass with some people assuming this is a straightforward random draw contest - the less days and chances the same people have to grab some of the instant 1k point wins.

Good christ. Doesn't matter how long winded of a post you make, it doesn't change the fact that it's a contest without a guaranteed win, no matter how good your odds are. Should all the Excel gum contests be posted in freebies too?

"Hey, here's a freebie, but you have to play after midnight to have a better chance, but don't all of you play at once after midnight or it'll defeat the point, and if you don't win anything with all your plays, just wait a week for new offers to load and maybe you'll win then, even though within a week there'll definitely be more people playing than on the very first night of the contest when my 'extended family' won 23k, especially now that it's in the Freebies section".

It's a contest.

Are we seriously arguing about whether a contest is a contest? Lol

Feel free to post it in freebies if you want, mods will prob remove it.

Ps. I've played each day, zero instant wins.
