2018 BMW X3 Brakes Replacement

I'm looking for a mechanic in York region who would be able to replace brakes on a 2018 BMW X3. Dealer has quoted $2900 + tax for all four brakes. This seems like a ridiculous amount of money considering how much the parts cost on RockAuto. This is my brother's car. Is he being charged too much by the dealer?

Lol wtf. That's easy DIY for $400-600 in parts.
I'll do it for $1000 in labor for you :). Been doing my my BMW for 20 years.

For a fair comparison assume the OEM brake parts costs and just look at the labhour.... not all brake pads are the same.

Hmm that seems a bit low for OEM-grade/quality parts, no? I don't mean exact OE parts but I don't think you'll get the parts that cheap unless you go for cheaper/lesser aftermarket stuff, no? I mean I haven't looked at X3 brake parts in particular but BMW ain't known for using small brakes either. I think M-sport brakes on the X3 are >340mm on both axles and also vented on both...doesn't sound like those will be too cheap. My guess we be more like $800-1200 in parts...I could be wrong but either way still a far cry from the $3k the stealer is proposing. And again they are probably just telling OP a "20%" story anyway

What's this 20% story you guys are referring to?

LOL basically any time you go to a stealership and they check your brakes they will come back with some nonsense about how your brakes are "at 20% and need to be replaced"--it's one of the oldest scams in the book. They will tell people this even if their brakes are perfectly fine and at 80% or more (I've seen/heard of it happening as such many times).

Either that or they do one better and tell you you're "nearly metal on metal" and you "shouldn't drive out of here or you might wreck"

In other words if don't actually have a brake problem, don't have the low brake pad light on, etc. and are just being told by a stealership you need to change your brakes (at a convenient cost of $3k)? Get a second opinion at minimum or better yet pull the wheels off and check yourself. That said if you know for sure both front and rear brakes need replacing, then that's another story. Usually this isn't the case though and it's the invariable "20%" scam.

Was just inquiring with my local German specialized mechanic, 2020 tiguan all 4 brake pads and rotors with OE parts comes to $1,309.93+taxes. $842.43 OE parts and $467.5 in labour @ $137.50/hour.

Not sure how much a dealer would charge. But last few months by local Honda dealer quoted me $1300+taxes for all pads and rotors changed on a 2017 civic. I expect upward of $2000+taxes from vw dealer

Insane. You can probably find the parts for less than 500, and it takes 30 min per brake tops.

It’s highly unlikely that it needs all 4 corners done at the same time. It’s probably the dealer up selling the service. Unless he has tripped the brake wear sensor in the front and back or pulled the wheels off himself and inspected it he is getting taken for a ride.

I just swapped over to winter tires on my wife’s 2018 X3 with 50,000km. Mix driving with 60% city / 40% highway and the brakes still have a ton of pad thickness left. I estimate that the fronts will last at least 100,000 km and rears 120,000km

One thing that accelerates the wear is the auto hold feature.
I was told by my mechanic that it will make the pads wear at least 2x faster.

OP, if you want to stick to BMW parts + service, try contacting BMW Markham. Their quote I got a month ago for 2018 X3 was ~$2000 for all 4 pads.
