Donald Trump happened, thus Toyota decided to build these in the USA to avoid tweet criticisim. However instead of the Corolla going there, they've simply upped Mexican production of the Tacoma which some units were already being built there anyways.

There's more to it than just labour such as tooling.bargain man wrote: ↑ Not sure why they even moved the Corolla to the states. It seems like it would be more expensive to build in the US vs here based on the difference in dollar.
The whole point of them moving the Corolla was that it was too low margin to manufacture in Canada.

Eh not really. The Mississippi plant was already making Corollas back in 2011 and has been the only thing it ever made. Whether Toyota had other plans for the Mississippi plant was the only unknown originally it was meant to build the Highlander, then changed it to the Prius but in the end all it made was Corollas but that's still not enough to supply North America, hence why some Corolla sedans in the US are Japan made. In terms of auto manufacturing in the US, its more net loss primarily because of GM closing so many factories and no new plants or shifts from literally everybody.

Simple. Rav4 is the volume mover now, not the Corolla. Cambridge plant is only producing Rav4 and RX now.bargain man wrote: ↑ Not sure why they even moved the Corolla to the states. It seems like it would be more expensive to build in the US vs here based on the difference in dollar.

This is correct. Though the Corolla's sales are still fairly large, the extreme push especially by Americans towards the RAV4 has meant even with Cambridge and Woodbridge pumping out RAV4s isn't enough. Plenty of RAV4 units for the US market are sent over from Japan. Canadian purchases of RAV4 nearly doubled in 5-6 years, while USA purchases nearly tripled in 7-8 years. 2019's sales numbers for the RAV4 combining America and Canada hits 500K, contrast to Corolla using the same metrics is only about 350K.

Mexico have cheaper labour cost and Trudeau was hellbent on getting them signed up for NAFTA2.0 when orange-kun would prefer just partnering up with us, so it is Trudeau's fault for allowing Mexico's cheap labour to continue damaging manufacturing base in CAN/US.JeganV wrote: ↑ Eh not really. With gas price dropping to the floor we can see the demand for large vehicle to continue, North Americans are very addicted to big stuff simply because we can.JeganV wrote: ↑ This is correct.
