2x4 between the joists

i have tried all different products to mount my ceiling fan and give up on the side mount options now.
i will get a 2x4 and mount it between the joists. There are many kinds of 2x4 and want some suggestions on the right type.

Framing lumber is fine, now about $7.50 each for 8ft

You can just get a cheap 2x4 like this one:

Any 2x4 will do.

If your vehicle will not handle the 2x4 Home Depot will cut it in half for you (there is usually a giant wall mounted saw that the employees use).

You can always ask if they have any cut pieces for sale. Some stores will have these, and you only need 16" or 24". That said I am not sure how much effort you want to put into find one since a whole one is $7.50. But any 2x3, 2x4, 2x6, piece will do if they have something. Again just not sure how much you'll save versus the potential effort.

I just added 3" screws into my existing mount which was nailed. Fans have been up 10 yrs.

I know now that there are fan rated boxes .. but really don't intend to take them apart.
