Speaking of Windsribe I noticed that it disconnects. I set it up on my Shield to tunnel only one app. I wanted to make it permanent, so I checked to connect on startup etc. I haven't rebooted the Shield in the past few days but every new day I discover that the VPN is disconnected. Do they disconnect you after some time? Is there a remedy? When I had PIA it stayed connected (seemingly) forever.

Same behavior on Android.

So basically $59 is the regular price for windscribe now. I'll keep waiting until it actually goes on sale.

I use the app in a similar way (few apps tunnelled) on my FireTV and haven’t seen it disconnect

Can you share what server you connect to? And what protocol you use. I connect to Chicago The L and use OpenVPN (UDP). I refuse to use non-open source IKEv2. I don't know why they are fond of it and use by default.

I pay for the US Unlimited package, so can only use servers in the US. Not using one server in particular, if one gives me trouble I quickly switch to another (right now using New York Empire for example). I can't find the option to use other protocols except for IKEv2 in the FireTV app, is the one for the Shield allowing you to use OpenVPN?

Yes, they call it "UDP". From their description online it's OpenVPN. Shield uses apps written for Android TV. They may be different from regular Android apps.
