[Fido] $49/55 Fido Plans: Canada-wide 800 min, ul eve/we/SMS/MMS, 800 MB **NOW 1000 + 1 GB**

www.fido.ca

$49 Standard Plan
$55 Smart Plan

For the uninitiated, the Smart Plans have better phone subsidy options. However, you can bring your own device and get a 10% discount off the $49 Standard Plan, for a final price of $44.10.

800 anytime minutes
Unlimited weekends and evenings starting at 5 pm
Canada-wide long distance
Unlimited SMS/MMS
Call Display
Mini Voicemail
Unlimited circle calling
800 MB data (with additional data $5 per 250 MB)

BTW, the $60 Standard Plan is now $59, and the $30 Standard Plan is now $29.

EDIT:

The $49/55 plan is now 1 GB and 1000 minutes.
The $59/65 plan is now 2 GB and unlimited minutes.

I think so, also with 1000 minutes. So this is worse, except it's $1 cheaper.

Strangely enough, I tried it on my wife's $39 plan from last year which also includes Mini-voicemail, and I managed to save about 10 messages before I stopped. Dunno if it was just a glitch or what.

fido was good before, but their customer service has gone downhill now. Terrible and coverage isn't the best compared to Bell and Telus.

Customer service at Fido has been very good to me personally, but YMMV.
Rogers/Fido coverage has been fine. Sometimes Bell and Telus are better, and sometimes they're worse. Again, YMMV, but I also live in Toronto.

No. Neither of them. In fact, you can't get the iPhone 5s subsidized at all on these plans. To get an iPhone with Fido, you need to be on a Max plan, which is quite a bit more expensive.

For unlimited voice and 500 MB data or unlimited voice and 1 GB data, it's $75 and $85 respectively for the iPhone-subsidizing Max Plans. Ouch. There are cheaper retention plans though that support the iPhone. However, only existing customers can get retention plans, and they're still not as cheap as the cheaper Fido plans.

I don't think they've gone down hill recently. Maybe 5-6 years ago they did but I haven't noticed any difference with their service lately. Coverage is subjective but I find them the best in the major cities. Bell/Telus definitely wins in more rural areas.

I've had this for a while and I hate it. I wish the upgrade to VVM wasn't so expensive.

Is it $4 or $9? It seems to be $9 from their website but lots of people still seem to be getting it for $4. Or maybe that's ended. However, $4 is too expensive too IMO. And $9 is just outrageous.

Luckily my $56 (+ further discount) unlimited + 2 GB Smart Plan from 2012 includes VVM for iPhone... which is interesting since that Smart Plan never supported iPhone subsidies.

Better than the new Koodo plans, that's for sure. But fido's network and customer service really isn't the best.
Also, I notice that it's better off to go with the $29 plan and pay $10 for 500MB overage data than go with the $39 plan.

The $29 plan only has 200 minutes.

Also, I noticed that why would anyone get the $49 plan instead of the $39 when the overage for data is $5 for 250mb so for $10 more you would get 900mb from the $39+$10 overage intead of the $49 plan with 800mb. If you do not go over you are saving. Who at Fido comes up with these plans.. smh..

Customer service is still good. Reception is good for most metro areas and suburbs, though weak when you go out of town.

The problem is that all plans from ALL providers have gone downhill because of the new 24 month cap on phone-subsidized contracts.

At least they gave you a way to save, not like what Koodo does with talk & text plans: $15 for 250mb which is freaking ridiculous. You get less minutes on top of that.
Who needs hundreds of minutes anyway these days?
I'm not sure if the Rogers network is the best though... When I had a Nexus 4, I usually got 2 or 3 bars around the city, and hspa kept falling back to 3G. This compared to Bellus' strong HSPA network that I got 4 bars everywhere. Maybe it's because Rogers focused more on LTE? Some even say Wind's network is better :D
