64 GB Micro SD card showing as 1 MB - ??

Hey all - I have a micro sd card that is 64 GB and i hadnt used it in a while.

I went to use it for a project and for some reason it is now showing as 1 MB only and i cant do anything with it.

I know it has been used before and showed up as 64 Gb - anything i can do to get this thing back to normal ?

2/15/10 edit - ok so this is happening to another sd card that i have - its a 128 gb and only showing up as 2 mb.

I know for a fact this card works because i had it currently running as retropie in my raspberry pi. and i know the 64 gb one was working because i had that in my pi before i got the 128 gb one.

so it turns out that a lot of people have this problem after they have used them in pi's

i am just not sure what to do to fix them

i have a laptop running linux so i put the 128 gb one in there and it sees it as the proper size - i tried reformatting the partitions and deleting some but i still dont see it on my windows pc

anyone have any ideas on what to do ?

Aside from it being a fake. I would go into disk management and see what the partition on it says. Some program could have repartitioned the card. If it did, just repartition it back to normal.

there has got to be a way to get this card to be recognized on my windows pc.

I can access it on my linux laptop and format it, make partitions, etc.

I was also able to get my phone to format it and then i could see the sd card when i connected my phone to my pc for the full storage space

but i just cannot get access to the card on my pc after all this.

It has something to do with the pi and/or retropie but for the life of me cant figure it out

hopefully someone way more knowledgeable than i can help !

Defective card reader? Try hooking up the phone to the computer and formatting it from there.

Use diskmgmt if you have to

i actually tried that but i didnt see an option of formatting when i clicked into my phone

what is strange is that when i put the micro sd card into the card reader on my laptop running linux it reads it just fine and shows as full capacity.

when i put the micro sd card into my sd card usb adapter and plug it into a usb port on my laptop then it shows up as 1 MB - same as on my desktop

Which filesystem were you using on it for your retropi and linux laptop? Most common linux filesystems can't be recognized or read by windows, and when windows sees filesystems it doesn't recognize, you can only manage/format them in Disk Management.

Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management. You should then be able to delete existing partitions and create/format new ones with exFAT or NTFS. filesystems.

If that doesn't work, probably a defective reader or dying card.

if ran in a raspberry it makes 2 partitions. one visible in windows and its usually very small and the rest all linux. If in windows Download sd formatter chose fat32 or default and try to reformat it with that. Whenever reformatting an old rpi img card. Sometimes You have to do it twice. The first time gives an error and the 2nd time works. Now it should be visible in windows

If it won't reformat double check its not locked.

All partitons should have been visible in linux tho.

well turns out the usb card reader i have is just old and doesnt work with newer sdxc sd cards

i forgot about my other windows laptop with a built in card reader and i was able to see the card just fine there - all that work and worry for nothing !
