AC Unit Leak advise

Would appreciate everyone's help on this one:
- Have a relatively new Goodman AC unit (<3 years)
- Unit is leaking somewhere (gas is gone, a tech has come by and confirmed the pressure is extremely low). Not able to cool down the house.
- They recommend a full replace of the unit without being able to diagnose where the leak is. They think it's not easy to find the leak without installing a new unit (which I don't buy).

Any advice here? Should I ask another company to see whether they can diagnose where the leak is? I know most issues with AC leaks are probably coil related but I am not comfortable replacing a relatively new unit without knowing where the leak even is (what if it's within the walls).

In Ontario, I believe they are not allowed to fill a leaking system, other than one time along with dye to find the leak. It's no guarantee they will find the leak though. In your instance I might think about calling in another company, something seems off to me if they didn't suggest anything more than full replacement

Wouldnt warranty be involved in this? 3 years is less than a full year of use time wise.

Even without registering, the warranty is minimum 5 arent they?

Sounds like this place is snowing you, they would know this as well

Without any action, your Goodman air conditioner comes with a 5-year parts limited warranty. But when you register your new Goodman unit and meet certain predefined conditions, your air conditioner will qualify for additional enhanced warranty coverage.

Thanks for the info, just for my information, would Goodman actually come and diagnose/fix the issue if the leak is not with the unit (in other words in the lining between the walls)?

Manufacturer never come out to diagnose the issue unless there is a recurring problem that can’t be figured out by technician.
3 year unit leaking means that the installation was not done properly as I highly doubt about a part failure. Do you by any chance know what kind of coil was used ? Until I started writing here on board many so called dealers were supplying low end coils under “ premium” brand.
If I was in your shoes, I would not toss a three years old unit. Please ask your friends and family to find a technician who will stand behind his work.

As already mentioned Goodman wont send out a tech however if you got a good company to come out and find out where the leak is exactly and if its a part that's covered under warranty then they can claim it through Goodman for the part to be covered (maybe not labor) But it does sound like the company who installed it probably did a poor job for it to already have an issue & no if the unit is only 3 years old you should not be replacing it that company just will likely make more money on a new unit and does not want to go through all the work of trying to find a leak.

Not sure where you are located but if you are in and around the GTA contact @newlyborn hes one of the recommended HVAC techs on RFDs with many positive reviews on RFD & home stars - https://homestars.com/companies/2876286 ... nditioning

Very honest and reliable Company if you don't want to be ripped off like the other company tried.

You got a sales tech, not a real technician.

Parts should be covered by warranty, labor and refrigerant will not unless you bought a labor warranty or have some other arrangement. (contractor's warranty or service plan)

When the unit is 10 years old or under, replacement should not even be considered unless there is a very good reason like being the wrong size.

Yes, find another company, there are some reputable contractors on this board.

One thing you can do is feel the refrigerant line joints both at the outdoor unit and indoors above the furnace; feeling oily indicates leakage. (there can still be leakage without oil)
Hvac advice warning - inaccurate information on forum, vested interests in selling builder's equipment. Selling dealer-only brands without being authorized is a red flag. Report to CRA if offered no tax cash-deal. If it's 2 good to b tru, it is.

Please have the contractor who installed the AC perform a full diagnostic to find the leak. You should have warranty on the parts if any of the components have failed. Please do your research to find a reputable contractor that is fully licensed including a 313d licence. Since Goodman is sold over the counter to any hvac contractor the contractors installing these AC units are not screened. We have had to clean up after some of these contractors that have poor workmanship and seen many situations where the AC was not installed correctly. Unfortunately some of the contractors installing these units have no fixed address and work out of the back of their truck. Here today, gone tomorrow. Please also ensure your AC unit is registered for the 10 year part warranty. If it is not registered you will only receive 5 year part warranty.
