ACE Rent a Car - YYZ

Looking to book a car to take to the cottage next month. Cost from usual suspects, Costco, Expedia, Priceline is between $500-$600 for a 7-seater SUV. But ACE has it for $250 - which sounds like too good to be true. Rental is for 5 days, and pick up and drop off is at its YYZ location. Given I have insurance through my CC I’ve declined all add ons

Reading through TA and other online reviews seems fairly mixed, but certainly trending towards negative. Anyone here have any specific feedback?

I personally would avoid any no name companies

ACE Rent a Car's parent company is Avis Budget Group, Inc.
They have more than 300 licensed locations in over 45 countries, and one of the largest system of independent rental car operators in the world.

I had rented a car from them a long time ago, and had no issues.

Occasionally when I've found a REALLY good rate from a reputable company it came with a km limit, or even worse no km included. Read the fine print on that $250 rate and do the math.

don't think so based on wiki said and how they're operating
selling their rental operations to Avis Budget Group in 2014, while still retaining ownership of the ACE Rent A Car brand, licensee system and proprietary software.

As of 2020, the ACE Rent A Car brand had more than 300 licensed locations in over 45 countries, and is now the largest system of independent rental car operators in the world
so they sold their operations at the time in 2014 to Avis/Budget, but any ACE branded locations aren't owned by Avis/Budget (and they can't be independent if they were actually owned by avis/budget) since that wasn't sold.

as to OP, read their reviews online for toronto location, take car rental reviews with a grain of salt but seems they take usual car rental upsell to whole other level and hidden fees/charges. seems to me they are a franchise model mostly (hence "affiliate agencies") after selling corporate locations to avis/budget. i tend to avoid franchise locations for car rentals
