Got from Source V5-561-6438 (pretty much same spec - i5 and 8gb with win 8) for 299. Good deal?

Will it have a lot of bloatware?

I know what you mean, and it's incredibly sad how laptop lcd tech is actually regressing. maybe I'll wake up tomorrow and find we're all living in caves again.

I wouldn't go that far, but any 15" laptop in 2015 should have at least a 1600x900 screen, and to see all these horrible, low-end, let's-count-the-pixels, 1366x768 15.6" screens still being sold is very depressing.

what's up for next year, the return of 1280x720 screens?

I agree with you guys about the screen. But getting a full hd 1080p screen won't be found under $500. You're look at at least $800+

but the problem is why this is happening.

the actual oem cost differential between a crappy 1366x768 screen and a 1920x1080 screen is about $25, and it's even less for 1600x900. so it's obviously not because of the actual cost of the item, and is really because everyone is producing crap in asia now, and they order 100K of generic units using the lowest of the lowest-end components, all *exactly* the same, and then try to sell them off. no more customization, no more component upgrades, just a "one crap config fits all" world.

it's a classic race to the bottom, and I suspect that a chinese manufacturer will open up an old, dusty plant and very soon 1280x720 15.6" screens will come back in vogue.

iPhones sell for $800+ and only cost $200 to make. The at-cost price of an item has no relationship to the final price in stores. As with anything in life if you want a premium item you have to pay the premium mark-up, otherwise be happy with your 1366x768 screen. It is 100 PPI, and that on a desktop/laptop is not exactly a bad resolution, it is usable for 80% of the population, even my parents with their aging eyes find 1366x768 too high and I have to increase the font size for them.

Not they are not $800+.
Example: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msc ... .313368600 You may also get student discount

Plus there was the Asus with 1080p recently for $499 too at MS.

If I am looking to buy 2 laptops for my GF and sister with specs similar to these Acer, is it likely that I would get a better deal during BTS? And also when are they usually starting? Mid august? Thanks

could you please cite the study where you found this 80% statistic?

and I'm not a 90-year old blind person, I am a student who represents a *very* significant portion of the laptop-buying consumer segment, and more and more of us buy in the usa to a) get a english kb and b) to get true high definition screens. 1600x900 and 1920x1080 are NOT rare in the usa, only up here, where laptop vendors dump all their obsolete junk.

for example, while visiting friends I drove from windsor to detroit and was amazed to find that best buy's 13' chromebooks come with a 1080p screen - seriously, and I just did a quick check on bestbuy.com and there are 300+ laptops with displays from 1600x900 to 1920x1080 and 327 with 1366x768 screens (a lot of which are 11-13" models where the rez makes sense). try that on the canadian site.

even with exchange (about $700 CAD), please find me something on the bestbuy.ca site, or any canadian site, that matches these specifications (1080p touchscreen, i5-5200u, 6gb, 1tb, ac wireless, 4.65lbs, 0.78" thin, etc.) for $700 and I will buy i today:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspir ... Id=2609025

we just get the upgraded uhd version at the "amazing sale price" of only $1299, leading to the conclusion that we either get obsolete low-end junk or nosebleed-priced top-of-the-line premium models, but nothing in-between. unless we drive down to the us.

sure, but these are rare and they go fast when they're on sale. the toshiba you cited is long oos (it was on sale for $599 and disappeared) just like the asus. I am beginning to agree with the critics who are saying we're a dumping ground for old tech.
