I wore the behind-the-ear loop kind of masks yesterday for a few hours, my ears hurt
Any alternative options which have behind the head loops instead?

They reduce transmission. Averages out to 7$ a mask. Not bad.

If you ride a a motorcycle with an open helmet and goggles, these masks are also useful for a wind/fly stopper. Same thing for stopping dust and sand if you you ride a mountain bike or gravel bike.

Why do you worry about what other people wear? Any mask is better than none.

I'm assuming yours are disposable, these are reusable. IIRC, 3-layer surgical masks are better for protection though less cost effective as these can be used many more times.
