Advice for basic Android tablet around 200$

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a tablet for my mom. I know she does not want the Amazon Fire, because they're just crap, cannot download the magazines she wants. I was looking for Lenovo Smart Tab M8 is it good or she's better with something else?

Here's what she will mostly use it for :
  • Facebook
  • Emails
  • Videos (YT, NetFlix)
  • Read magazines
Thanks

Just to say that I can read magazines on my Amazon Fires.

One just needs to install Google Playstore and thus download whatever apps to read ebooks, eMagazines, eNewspapers and listen to audiobooks either borrowed from public libraries or privately purchased from Kindle store or Robo store.

So what apps is she using for reading emagazines?

Why not iPad

The smoothness of using iPad makes it a good device for seniors and kids

Can you get a used/old but not too laggy iPad for under $200?

IPad Air

Ipad air 2 can be 250 ish as well

Certainly it is used. But it's pretty smooth

Around 200 doesn't mean below 200, right?

Is the iOS up to date on the iPad Air 2?

I currently use an iPad 2018 everyday and apps are always crashing after using it for a few days. If I open FB marketplace, I can't make it more than a few pages and FB app crashes. I have to do a hard reset almost every week.

My mom likes tabloid stuff and is subscribed to National Enquirer (I know...). Last time I checked, this magazine is not available on Amazon Fire.

Is there a good performance difference between the Amazon Fire HD 2016 and the new one? The 2016 is unusable. It's damn slow.

What about these models Lenovo M8 FHD, Lenovo M10 Plus or Samsung Galaxy Tab A (2019)?

Get a Chromebook which is basically a Android Tablet (get one with access to Google Play Store) with a keyboard. Added bonus is it's easier to type on a keyboard which is attached to the screen. You can also angle the screen for viewing.

There are some where the screen can flip over and close down and some that even detach (both cost a bit more money) but I find I always need the keyboard for typing my search items and also as a base to hold up the screen at the proper viewing angle.

Chromebooks are not cheap.
It will be hard pressed to find one with a flip-over keyboard for around $200.

Thanks, but this is the old M10 from 2017. Like one wrote, the amazon has a better cpu for the same price. 🤷‍♂️

Lower end ones are somewhat cheap...but not the ones with flip over keyboards/detachables. BTW lower end Chromebooks are fine for the masses IMO - just browsing, YT, Netflix, emailing.FB, reading mags which is what the OP wanted.

I have a Acer Chromebook 11 and I think I only paid $190 + tax (Nov 2018) .

She already owns a laptop. She mostly need it for bedtime reading. So I guess I’ll take a look at the ones I’ve seen so far.

How’s the one sold at Costco? The Asustek I think.

I know you mentioned not Amazon fire HD but I picked up a near mint Fire HD10 from a local guy for $100.

The 64gb version.

I read this thread below and turned off all stock amazon bloatware. Loaded google play store and bob’s your uncle!

amazon-fire-hd-8-10-tablets-general-info-tips-2276049/

Using YouTube, liveTV, Tubi etc.

Thing is decent browsing wise. Pretty sure you can load your moms apps on it.

Battery life is good too.

I’m pleasantly surprised.

Great for night time watching of CP24 too!
