update - so we ended up getting a honda pilot.
it was a close race between honda pilot, toyota highlander and mazda cx9.
they all have plenty of room, but ultimately, it was the price break i get on th epilot plus its rave reviews that won us over.
we're still in the process of selling our old car, and will be moving the little one here shortly.
twins are due in sept.
Advice - seeking SUV/CUV that can seat 1 toddler and 2 infant seats across rear seats

Why wouldn't it? My Yaris has done us fine for our 4 year old. Got it 1 year before she was born. Even with a large stroller it hasn't been a problem. There is no room for a passenger in the rear sometimes but that's the same as it would be with 2 kids in the back.

Although side impact room is important I would pick a truck/minivan that has elevated seating, in an event of side impact their torso will be further above the impact zone.
