Aeroplan redemption questions

Hey All,

Not sure if this belongs here or travel but please forgive me if this belongs elsewhere.

I'm looking to redeem AP points, and I recognize that the new structure is based on pricing. But I'm also wondering if prices drop, does the redemption levels drop as well?

Example, I'm tracking a flight and although the price has not gone up, the number of points is increasing. This is alsovover 3 months out. I'm looking for flights end of June. I've noticed that when price goes up even by $100 the AP required also goes up.

But if the price goes down, will the required AP also go down?

Theoretically if the price of the flight goes down the points required should go down too.

Now by how much and by how many points I don't know.

Yeah it's strange, in my case the cost has been same get the AP points have been going up. When the price did increase the AP went up but not sure why it wouldn't go down if the price is also reduced. Strange.

Are you logged in when looking at redemption level? Also, are you logged into different accounts? Different people will have different pricing. You get better redemption pricing if you have a premium aeroplan credit card or some level of elite status vs somebody who does not.

Yes. Logged in using the Aircanada app. No fancy status, using Td aeroplan via infinite. Also, using shared family account so no change in pricing between accounts.

Oh, my wife and I (and kids) are also in family account. However, if I use her account, I get a cheaper price than if I use my account even though we are part of the same family account. I'm not saying that is why you are seeing a discrepancy as it's aeroplan so could be almost anything...

Out of curiousity, why would this be the case? Is it because you have an aeroplan credit card and she doesn’t that makes your redemption cheaper in points?

Family account is only for enabling sharing points. Every individual still has their own "status." My wife has 25K status and the Aeroplan Reserve AMEX, TD Visa Aeroplan Infinite, CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite. I have no status and only the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite. My redemption is cheaper than somebody who has absolutely nothing, but hers is a little bit cheaper than mine. I just booked a return trip with her account from YVR-YEG for a tad over 5K points + tax per person, which I thought was a pretty good deal. I believe mine would of been about 500-1K more points for the same trip/same time.

I suspect it's the 25K status, but perhaps it could be she has the Premium level card (Reserve, Privilege) vs my regular Infinite and no status.

Type of credit card and status will affect the points discount for every Aeroplan account holder.

In addition, with dynamic pricing, depending upon how many seats are left in each fare bucket, merely doing a search can result in the next search increasing in points. Will drop back down eventually if no ticket is actually booked.

It is the status.

I've noticed capacity limits too. The top direct flight used to have space for economy award, now only business. The connection thru USA require a partner booking fee.
