Were you looking on amazon.com? This lens is normally 3600, including amazon.ca. It dropped to 2800 a few times and 2750 once before.

2600 is a new low price as per 3X humped animal.

If you are in GTA, call around and you may be able to get it cheaper. Some dealers, like Aden, sometimes sell for less than MAP (Minimum Advertised Price = price floor set by the manufacturer).

Just make sure you get a Canadian model so you can get warranty and service (Nikon Canada will not service non-Canadian Nikon, aka grey market).

Nikon has always been crazy with their prices. Why I have always chosen Canon.

The very similar Canon lens is $1329

It's the latest 70-200 f/2.8 version for the F mount (DSLRs). It was announced October 19, 2016. I doubt there will be another version. Works on DSLRs and Z (via FTZ adapter).
There is a 70-200 2.8 S for Z mount (mirrorless). Only works on Z mount (mirrorless), not DSLRs. It was announced January 2020 and has not shipped yet. List price of $3400 CAD for pre-order.

That seems to be a trend. Look at the Sigma Art or Nikon S lenses. Big and heavy, even the primes.

Also, note that the "G" series lens often goes on sale for $2500 but I can't remember the last time I saw the "E FL" get to this price.

Unfortunately, my wallet would cry if I even thought about getting this.

One thing to consider with a professional lens, is that a major component of the cost is the durability of the lens. Non-professional lenses are fine for most people. Unless you are planning on taking this to some very rugged places and using this lens a lot, a professional lens may not be required. This lens is designed to survive drops, harder weather conditions, dust storms, etc...If you're using your camera primarily for pictures of family/friends, you may not need to go this heavy.

This is the “FL” version of the lens - it’s NOT normally around $2500.... The non-FL version is normally around $2500. CCC shows Amazon has never sold this lens for lower than $2750....

There are 3 versions of this lens, V1 (very old), V2, (quite old but good) and this new one FL (one of the best lenses of all time).

It has been on amazon.ca for $2599 for quite a while, BUT it's a 3rd party seller so you might have warranty issues and doesn't ship through Prime.

Now it's selling for $2599 but through PRIME

Glad to see Nikon doing $1000 off sales again.

FL is a new lens element which is lighter than traditional glass. About 100g lighter than the previous vrii version.
