Just a quick search on a few days in the first week of October (I randomly chose that month) yielded some results, albeit they will require an overnight in LAX/SFO (not a bad use of the Amex Marriott free certificate). The screens (different dates) were taken with incognito (no status or cc). The image with price with decimals is a 35K with Aeroplan Reserve cc, just to show the ranges. Of course 50K and up will see it discounted even more.

Coming back I suspect you'll have to go through the US again (didn't search sorry). I've seen some dates previously where you could fly YVR-ORD-TYO in first class and the price was actually lower than the published rate.

let me guess, you are using your mobile device to search through aircanada app..
did you know that those flights you chose is mixed cabin, for example, YVR - SFO - NRT you chose.. it's 14% business class. yes you fly shittiest 737 business class for 2 hours, and rest of the journey is in economy, not to mention 17 hour layover.. Seriously, I tried.. there were few that were 150K round trip before end of April, but since other countries started opening up, it's all dried up
Ones you picked, are all Japan which is also cheaper temporary as their travel restriction (only allows tour guided travelers) makes it less desirable. Try searching with no mixed cabin or at least major leg in business.. you won't find anything under 150K one way if lucky.. or 300k+ for any other Asian destination other than Japan (maybe China.. never bothered to check as it's not possible to travel anyway)

Wrong, I used web and no it was actually all business Mitsubish down to SFO and 787 over to NRT on United. I just rechecked on a random date. I'm not going to search the entire schedule for you but the fact remains you can get yourself where you need to be albiet with a small sacrifice. Especially if you're looking a few months out and not near end of schedule or close-in. Can probably get shorter connections but again not my trip so Im not searching for it lol. As for myself, Im transiting through NRT to BKK all in F from ORD (ex-YYZ) and on to DPS with a stopover in BKK for 133.5K AP and $197 next month. Booked last week. Business was available as well for under the published partner rate as dynamic helped me out.

It depends on your destination and the partner airlines. For example, EVA only open ups redemption for other Star Alliance partners a few days before the flight. The good thing about AC is you can redeem only 45k points + cash for a business class instead of full 75k points. If I only have 90k points and if the flight is open for multiple business seats for redemption, my wife and I can both in business with some cash out of pocket, where they should be $8000 all cash. You see the value now? It totally depends on how you use it so people really should stop saying “oh AC is a total crap”.

Impossible. I was told nothing less than 150K and if I find it I should buy some lottery tickets as well cause apparently I'm the luckiest person Grinning Face With Smiling Eyes. It took 2 people one quick search to find a viable alternative to paying extremely high prices lol.

I have to be do a one way, Taipei - YVR flight (non-stop) next March. The current cash fare is higher than if I bought the 50k pts ticket w Aeroplan right now but that's assuming the cash fare is going to stay this high. Right now, it's around $1250 per ticket even though my husband says pre-pandemic it should be around $800. I'm not 100% prices will return to pre-pandemic.

Should I bite the bullet and buy the pts at this bonus rate now and just buy my ticket at 50k pts or wait to see if cash fare drops?

This is almost exclusively limited to Air Canada right now..
Air Canada was #1 in the world including ULCC in cancellation, delays, etc..
Beside, aeroplan points are so devalued to the point that it's a joke.. before pandemic, I could redeem 150K points to 2 stops business class to Asia booking last minutes round trip.. now it costs 180k flying one way on economy or 720k business class round trip.. that's 4.8x devaluation unless you book far ahead of time

I don't know how you would find business class round trip to Asia for 175K points. I've been looking for decent redemption, and cheapest I've came across last 4-5 months was 150K one way (80k once on flight to Japan when Japan had their border closed but nowhere to be found now) or 360k one way on the average.. and that's taking multiple layovers.

Basically your looking for flights to somewhere in Asia from now to next late April and you cant find anything sub 150K on Aeroplan in J.

  • You realize Asia is kinda a big place .
  • You have stated multiple dates....maybe be a little more specific
  • Maybe start with a destination and someone can help you
  • You have been given multiple examples of J
  • I have zero issues finding space for most of the dates you gave with departures from YVR/SEA/SFO/LAX to ICN/SIN/TPE/NRT/HND/HKG for return @150k to 170k with the main leg in J or all J
  • Would be helpful if you gave a departure city as this would help narrow choices and positioning flights if needed.
  • If you don't have the points and are trying to figure out if buying points are worth the money (the point of this thread) you need to be a little more organized.

Not sure where you are looking but there are all kinds of flights from TPE to YVR for a lot cheaper than that. Use ITA Matrix or Google flights and search.

Cathay Pacific has many for under $670 via HKG. United has a number under $800 via SFO. FOrget the AC flight. It is overpriced

I see those flights too but I’m only willing to fly direct. The 50k redemption is for a direct EVA flight.
