Air Canada Centre to be renamed Scotiabank Arena

https://www.thestar.com/sports/2017/08/ ... arena.html

I think this sound so stupid.... Ottawa Senators used to play in Scotiabank Place (now Canadian Tire Centre)... it would make the Leafs sound like they are playing in Ottawa :(

Welcome to the world of sponsorships...

Calgary - Scotiabank Saddledome
Halifax - Scotiabank Centre

Edmonton - Rogers Place
Vancouver - Rogers Arena

by then, the place would have been 40+ yrs old and perhaps a brand new stadium is in dire need.

Don't forget Rogers Centre in Toronto.

New name sounds stupid, but sometimes sponsorships are funny.... like TD Gardens. Take that Boston!

After Scotia bailed on Buskerfest, Nuit Blanche, CHIN Picnic and Caribana in 2015, I guess the money had to go somewhere

Yeah but Rogers literally owns "Rogers Center" (aka the SkyDome), as well as the Toronto Blue Jays. While Air Canada, Scotiabank, TD do not own those venues, they just pay to have their name and promotional marketing on them.

Exactly this.

Futhermore, indirectly via MLSE, Rogers (and Bell) own the ACC (soon to be Scotiabank Arena), BioSteel Centre, Maple Leafs, Raptors, Marlies, FC, Leafs TV, NBA TV Canada, etc.

This is free money to them if a corporation wants their name to appear.

I will forever call it the ACC, just like I still use Skydome.

Agree name is "meh".

Although of all the big banks I like the service at Scotiabank best, so there's that :-)

Yeah, they should have bought the Clippers and moved them to Winnipeg.

More like "should have bought a southern US based hockey team and moved them to Quebec City."

I need to see Quebec City vs. Montreal hockey again and would commit to Scotiabank forever if they helped make it happen!

Not that it matters much, but there will be less exposure of our country's name on American NBA or NHL telecasts.
No more "Tonight live from the Air "Canada" Centre in Toronto...blah, blah, blah".

Wish they were more creative... at least it's Scotiabank Saddledome... they kept some of the original name...

No one will refer it as Scotiabank Centre... It'll be ACC...

Would people have accepted Scotiabank Maple Leafs Garden?

What a waste of 800 million. I'll never get naming a sports arena for these arm sums of money.

It never made me want to fly with Air Canada and certainly not banking with Scotiabank!

It works. Paramount has dissapeared from our conciousness. Growing up in the heart of toronto whenever someone said "paramount", it would refer to the huge cinema downtown.

Now i don't hear anyone calling it that anymore.. just scotia theatre.

Skydome vs rogers center.
Im going to try to keep that one alive.

Weird thing... toronto raptors is sponsored by bmo , a competitor to scotia.
