Air New Zealand to test out bunk beds in economy class

hmm this is a very interesting idea, these types of pods exists already in hidden sections of widebodies for flight attendants rest.

the article seems to suggest these beds could be shared but the passenger must have a standard seat for take of and landing as these pods would not be allowed for passengers to use while take off and landing. Similar how full business pods cannot be in sleep mode during take off and landing.

If you could rent these seats for say 4-6 hours at a time on a super long haul like auckland to nyc you could have 3 people use the bed staggered on the flight. Introducing a new tier of sort of above premium economy but below business.

Interesting idea, but i suspect the airlines will stick to the current model of cattle economy class, premium economy (basically the old business class) and true business class. With the odd airline pushing luxury limits of first class.

Anyone flying from new zealand is used to paying super high fares due to their isolation, don't think this idea will really catch on but I love the idea.
